A Letter to Traffic & Parking at FAU

"I am aware that the commuter students are having issues with the parking as well, but I cannot speak on behalf of the commuters. I am simply speaking on behalf of the residents of FAU, paying thousands and thousands of dollars in tuition to attend our university, paying for parking decals, paying for housing and meal plans, and I’m curious where this money is going if not to have spaces for EVERY resident living on campus. Now, in addition to all of the money they spend here and not having a spot to park their vehicle, they now have a $25 parking ticket, at least, to add to their dues."

Sounds like FAU has some growing pains.

They're still parking pretty much anywhere they want. I think it's kind of cool, actually.

FAU doesn't care for it, of course. Temporary posts are in the ground with police line tape between them along the edges near IRT so people don't park there. People who do park in the grass are apparently only getting warnings this week, not tickets. At least that's what the Shuttle Driver, who works for T&P, told me. He also told me that a new parking lot with 300 spaces is supposed to be built on the south side of GPT - over by the electrical station, where the construction guys for GPT parked - starting next week.

The author in the link is wrong though. GPT is only ~600 students, not 1000. No single dorm on campus houses 1000 (until Innovation Village Apts are built). She is right about this though: "As if parking here were scarce enough, our parking lot is going to be taken over by a theater? The engineering of parking at FAU is asinine." You could argue that they had to build the new building/theater there because it's a media program and needs to be close to Performing Arts, the theater, etc as a programming cluster. But it could be built just south of Parking Garage 2 (a short distance away) and be fine there as well.

I knew this would be a problem. FAU knew it would be a problem. Yet they chose to build a parking lot on the north side of the Breezeway first? Why?
