@Walty12. I agree. UM has way less to offer. UF,FSU (the  big two ) have  so much more. Most of the fan base are grads or family of grads. Miami has wanna be Canes that have no true affiliation to the school. I know how UM got to the top, but I don't understand how they are keeping there reputation going. Certainly not with great success on the field. They have been good, not great. They are even keeping the reputation going in baseball. They are good, but not great. Give them credit for fooling a lot of kids into thinking that being a Cane means something special. A perfect example..look at who was drafted into the pros this year. Lets not count punters.

Miami has three things going for it

  1. Its in the ACC
  2. It has a lot of money
  3. Name Recognition is very high.

Actually Dusky, the sad reality if we're comparing alumni donors … UM does have a TON of money.

As they are a private university, they somehow "force" about 65% and climbing of the student alumni to donate back to their alma mater.

Do you wanna know what percentage of a alumni donates at FAU?

I don't think anyone should know this fact but I'll go ahead and post it anyway as I worked for FAU's department…

It generally hovers around ONE PERCENT!

1% of the entire FAU alumni base ever donates ANYTHING! (And that includes most donations being around $20 VS UM donors on average giving $200)

There are several things working against FAU here:

They weren't even a real 4-year university with decent student housing numbers until about 2007 and they were finally putting together decent football around that time!  And sports do bring in a LOT of donors!

Even today, I believe ONLY about 5% of all FAU students:
  1. Live on campus
  2. Attend FAU for their full bachelors degree and get it within 4 years (state legislation awards more money to universities for the number who graduate in 4 years and over 60% of our students are completely transient.)
  3. Care about university athletics and creating a traditional university feel

We are definitely moving forward as a traditional university but I don't think we are truly anywhere near where even USF and UCF are and we do have a long way to go.

We'll get there but it will take longer than most of us would like.
