Broward, Palm Beach County students flocking to Florida's smaller Universities

Florida Gulf Coast and UWF both have about 11,000 students, and UNF has about 16,600. Compare that with UF's 50,000 students, and FSU's 40,000. South Florida's local universities are large as well, with about 40,000 attending Florida International University in Miami and 28,000 at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

The number of freshmen from Broward and Palm County has tripled at Florida Gulf Coast in the past five years, from 155 to 458.

"We're close, two or three hours away, and it's been a good alternative for those students who look at UCF or (the University of South Florida), which are four or five times the size," said admissions director Marc Laviolette.

I hear great things about UNF. One of my managers has a daughter who goes there.

Not only do they have a crazy active Greek Life, they just opened a new dorm this semeste that holds 1000 people and boasts tennis/volleyball/basketball courts, putting green, fitness center, game room, convenience store, running track, lazy river (seriously) and "themed lounges" such as a room for giant bean bags for comfy studying.
