Budget Cuts Continue For FAU

Would it be less expensive to hire students to cut the grass around campus than have a contracted company do it? Is that allowed?

Just trying to think outside the box

And instead of paying you by the hour, they can pay you in credit hours.  ;)

Would it be cheaper? Yes.
Would it get done? No. The students would flake out. You know this better than most, Smitty ;)

Interesting idea though.

I'm just hoping they don't turn off the A/c in the Summer/Fall. It's so hot, turning off the A/C should be illegal.

The Treasure Coast campus is very unique.

Closing the TC campus is not an option in my opinion.

Also on that campus is the NY Mets  spring training facilities.

Brogan acknowledged a little while back that the "distributed campus system" was set up "shotgun style" across the east coast of Florida; he basically implied that it was a bad move spreading resources across so many campuses.

The fact is, he's right. Small universities usually can't thrive like this… a Penn State can. A University of California can. A mid-size school that's not even a flagship will have troubles with this. And we do.

We can eventually make this work if it's like 40k students at Boca and 10-20k spread out among the other campuses. But right now it's too hard.

Anyway, it's amazing that he pointed the shotgun thing out since he's usually so "kumbaya we're all FAU" all the time.

More recently, he warned that there will have to be cutbacks and faculty layoffs. Course sections will be cut. In the grand scheme of things, displacing 500 students out of ~27k is manageable. Obviously Boca has to stay open, Davie has to stay open because it has the second highest student population (I believe it was ~5k and projected to go up to ~9k). Jupiter has the Honors College, all the biomed stuff and maybe this future TB hospital.

SeaTech has very few students but it's mostly a research facility for graduate students. That leaves the Treasure Coast campus on the chopping block.

Now the TC campus is about 45 minutes away from Jupiter, it's true. But we could sell off our TC property and direct those students and faculty to Jupiter. If they can't make it, what are you going to say? It's tough times and we're not McDonald's. We can't be on the edge of every block just so you don't have to drive to school. I have people in my classes at Boca from Vero Beach, Pompano, etc. Hell, it even takes me about 20 minutes to get to school… so we all put in a little bit of a drive to get to campus every day.

That being said, I'm pretty sure that Brogan is on the same page as you are, Smitty. He doesn't want to close campuses. I'd be very surprised if they actually did.

Are the people we are paying to cut the grass now getting paid a lot of money?  I think there are other options before cutting the extra $.50 cents an hour a guatamlean lawn specialist makes that would have much more of an effect on the bottom line.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

I think doing away with the CLAST would save Florida Universities some money.  This is the only state that makes their college students take a standardized test to get out of college.  It makes no sense.

A standardized tests for those that didn't achieve a high enough level of math, correct? I didn't need to take the CLAST to graduate

Math & English, because I did not have to take it either.

Math & English.  There are still many students whose weaknesses may be in this area (Learning disabilities).  Once you get into college you should not have to be subject to pointless standardized test's.  As long as your are achieving a 2.0 in each class you should be fine.  This exam makes some students frustrated give up on college because they can't pass certain sections of the exam.  It's really a waste of time and resources.

I respectfully disagree.

If you receive a 2.0 in each class… then you don't have to take the CLAST, right? It's only for Math and English below a C. Isn't that accurate?
