CAMPUS LIFE - now and then

Florida_Owl: The pizza joint I remember might have been called Jerry's. The one I knew was on a slight hill, fairly big, wooden floors, a bit of a bandstand, pitcher beer, no checks accepted (especially students). Come to think of it, that sounds like most pizza joints I know….

OwlCountry: The history prof who wrote the book was Dr. Donald Curl. I have a copy somewhere. The library has copies, as well. I think I saw one on eBay one time, too. In addition, a former administrator wrote a book of sorts, basically praising himself as the great savior of the university and giving scant, if any, credit to anyone else. He was Roger H. Miller, a retired military guy who found and kept a cush job in the administration. He was VP for administrative affairs, or something like that.

Re: CAMPUS LIFE - now and then

is Jerry's Pizza the place next to Swifty's on 20th? or am I thinking of something else?

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

The only nearby place for sandwiches was the venerable Grace's Food Store, fairly close to the main eastern entrance to campus and near the old American Federation of Teachers apartment complex (which housed some students). The complex still stands, but it is called something else these days. All of that was years before the renovation of Grace's, back when it was owned by Mark Grosso, named for his wife Grace and staffed, part-time, by son Dominic. The street running north-south in front of Grace's went in front of the nearest pizza joint, up a hill and a block or two to the south. I have forgotten the name, but I recall that the beer was cold.

I read the other day in the paper that Grace's was going to reopen soon (under new owners).  Dominick Grosso is a pretty well known lawyer in town these days.  They made the best sandwiches ever… You had to put the relish on them, it was awesome.  The pizza place is not Jerry's or at least if it was it moved.  The area Greyowl is talking about is to the south of 20th street on Boca Raton Blvd, across from where Lee's BBQ is now.

The same guy who didn't like the color tan as a school color because it reminded him of war?

I never heard that, but it wouldn't surprise me. In any case, I'm glad the tan idea didn't take hold. Unless it could be combined with black. Then I could think of a fine drink for FAU, a Black & Tan.

Re: CAMPUS LIFE - now and then

Two things I forgot to mention.

1) The bar-b-que place near the campus. I 'm having trouble remembering the name. I believe the owner opened a brand new place in the 80's. The guy supposedly was a New York chef that opened the place. Someone help me with the name. Is it Tom's?

Anyway. The original place back in the 70's was a totally run down SHACK. The inside was a dive but they had the best bar-b-que I ever ate. As gnarly as this place was, all the rich people from the "white neighborhoods" showed up on Fridays in their Mercedes, Cadillacs (yes people drove Cadillacs in those days) and BMWs. Alot of FAU students ate their. You could get a big bar-b-que rib plate for about $4.00.

2) Toga parties. This craze started with the movie "Animal House" which came out in 1978.
