CAMPUS LIFE - now and then

This is a great thread. I will post my detailed recollections of when I took my first classes at FAU (already 10 years ago!) soon, but I wanted to share some good news. They are FINALLY painting the SO (Social Science building). The eyesore was left unpainted when it was built due to a budget shortfall. Now it is green, matching the new nursing building.

Are you sure it was due to a budget shortfall and not intended to be concrete? Lots of architecture employs that same sort of concrete with lighting very similar to what is used in the SO. I preferred it with the concrete but I knew the paint was coming after talking to Brogan and seeing the paint note on a Minor Projects list.

In another note, the UC/SU is being renovated in light of the upcoming debates. The grime on the outside has been cleaned, the inside is being painted a light blue, the lighting is being changed, the upstairs is now a dull yellow (no more aquamarine stripe!) with carpet being put down in the upstairs hallway by the Sugar Palm.

Re: CAMPUS LIFE - now and then

GrayOwl,
I always enjoy your posts. Interesting to hear about the coffee house. The walkway going to the University Center still has the markings in cement from 68 or 69 (can't remember exactly). I wish someone would take notice and preserve stuff like that. Was the breezeway there during your day? As a commuter student the breezeway, coffee machines, and lethal cement picnic tables off the breezeway are etched in my memory. I love that damn breezeway, a sauna in the summertime though.

I also remember the faculty. They were all very approachable, and acted like mentors. I went to FAU on the 6 year pay as you go program.  :D

It was an experience I'll never forget, and I feel very blessed to be an alumni.

Does anyone remember the Sammy's "secret bus parties" organized by Kurt Federow and his bunch?

Where they would take you on the bus, for a modest fee, to an undisclosed location (with the windows blacked out by garbage bags even sometimes) and a myriad of under age drinkers would guzzle tons of cheap keg beer?  Usually Natural Lite, or Busch?

i believe one of them actually was at Spanish River Beach, and that went bust early…

it was kind of silly to make it a secret…once you took a ride on the bus, you knew where it was and could call people and tell them…lol

LOL - Yes, I remember them. I think I went to two of them my Freshmen year (94).

Re: CAMPUS LIFE - now and then

The breezeway was there in 1967-68-69, as were the concrete picnic tables. Those damned things certainly got hot in the summer. The student president one of those years was none other than Ken Jenne, the former Florida legislator and Broward Sheriff, who recently was nailed down in Broward. (Do a Google search if you want the details. I doubt that the Alumni Association will be putting out a press release on this.) The Atlantic Sun, the old student newspaper, was housed in a temporary building along the west side of the breezeway, essentially beside a men's room. The paper was printed (under contract) in those days by the old Boynton Beach Star. The faculty was very approachable. In fact, it was not unheard of for students and faculty to party together on occasion. In addition, some of the women from the old Marymount College on Military Trail would join the fray from time to time.

Marymount became College of Boca Raton and coed. It hadn't been coed too long and was still very predominatly women. A guy that was attending there at the time used to come over and party with us. After a while he decided to transfer to FAU and moved into our dorm two doors down from me. After a few visits to the College of Boca Raton, I can see why he wanted to transfer.  Anyway….. after he moved to FAU, car loads of girls from the College of Boca Raton used to come to the dorm and party that year since there wasn't enough guys to go around at their college.  That only lasted a year. Harry couldn't stay out of academic problems from partying too much.  That was also the year of the illegal beagle as we called it after Harry was gone.  Harry, on a whim, decided to buy a beagle and kept it in the dorm for 6 weeks. I don't have any idea how the RA never found out. We were all pretty tight so no one complained. The dog wasn't house broken and pooped all over their room and chewed everything up.

Are there are any guys out there from the dorm 6 "animal house" era?

The "Rat" used to have the best hip hop/reggae parties in the mid-mid/late nineties, btw.

Hey Illinois and GrayOwl– I think the College of Boca Raton is now Lynn University. Love the story about Illegal Beagle, reminds me of "Three's Company".  :D

8) Dear Moderators and alumni:

Anyway we could refresh this post for new and potential students? It might be a way to better explain what life is like when you are an Owl, and a way to explain our school's history.

Thanks,
