FAU Bright Futures recipient accused of abduction of sleeping girl at knifepoint

When the young stranger slipped into the Coral Springs home, scooped the sleeping girl out of her bed and headed for the door, it typified "a parent's worst nightmare," the prosecutor said in her opening statement Thursday.

When the girl's grandmother awoke and intervened, Timothy Christian Schlafer put the 11-year-old girl down, rubbed her stomach and told her he didn't want her to throw up before he dashed from the house in the early morning hours of May 14, 2008, the girl testified.

Schlafer, a Coral Springs High senior, was just weeks away from graduation and held a scholarship to Florida Atlantic University. Now 19, he faces the possibility of life in prison if a Broward jury convicts him of the crimes he is charged with – armed kidnapping and armed burglary with battery.
