FAU lowest alumni giving in state and one of lowest in USA

I met a FAU grad many years ago that moved near to me in Georgia. He went on to med school after FAU then went to another university for oncology. He lived on campus and his family had a history with FAU. He told me that he received solicitations from FAU for donations.  After attending all those universities he didn't feel obligated to donate to any of them or to have to chose one out of all the others. So if we had our own med school, who would those students feel loyal to? Their undergrad, the med school or if they are specializing, which med school if different from the first.

Essentially the specialization – the oncology residency – is not a second med school… it's more like a program of a medical school at a hospital. If you do a residency in internal medicine at Shands (UF's teaching hospital) you're not really a UF alumni so there's no "obligation" to donate to UF.

I do want to donate to FAU down the line but I want it to go to very specific things like statues by the stadium, establishment of certain majors not currently offered, entertainment (ping-pong table, poker room, bowling alley, and so forth) etc.

The Senior Class clock was a great idea (2007 alumni would pay $20.07 as a donation, 2006 alumni paid $20.06, etc) and I hope they do projects like that in the future. I'd like to see "Class of" projects all over the campus done every two years.

i think a huge part of it is the types of degrees they dont hold as well:

Law
Medical
Architecture

see a trend here?

you can only give so much as a teacher, manager, and police officer…

I thought FAU has a school af architecture. The classes are held at the Ft Lauderdale campus.

FAU's School of Architecture

you're right…i stand corrected…that was one of the last things catanese put in motion…my bad…

Wasn't it named for him at one point?

Or was that the "Spread FAU's Resources Across A Million Commuter Campuses School of Architecture"? That guy did more harm than good, that's for sure. That being said, Brogan and Co. are supporting his decision by doing asinine things like building a a Student Union on the Davie campus.

I heard a story about President Popovitch (who the BOT gave a vote of non-confidence to – wouldn't have wanted to be in the room when that happened) where she would come into faculty meetings completely clueless about what was happening and why we were doing the things we were doing. No wonder they tossed her out.

I know I shouldn't be laughing but we did make it a bit funny.

As far as Brogan continuing the multi campus thing. Maybe now that they are part of FAU, the only thing to do is improve them. The university can't get rid of them.

Yeah, I know we can't get rid of them but I imagine that it's only a matter of time before we'll say something like, "Let's build a $20 million gym on the Port St. Lucie campus."

…when the Boca campus, which they've designated as the main, traditional campus needs a million other things.

Be careful what you wish for. The Pappas report (http://www.flbog.org/forwardbydesign/backblue.asp) recommends converting some community colleges and satellite campuses into independent undergraduate-only institutions. Campuses that could grow to at least 10000 students are the best candidates. The Davie campus certainly fits the recommendations. I wouldn't be surprised if it's an independent institution within ten years. The Port St. Lucie campus, being so distant, may also be a candidate. With further competition for 4-year degrees from community college like IRCC (which is also a good candidate to become an undergrad-only institution) FAU may have far fewer students enrolled (although academic standards will be much higher if this happens, since FAU's mission would have to change).

But I thought it was a voluntary issue for the involved schools (like FAU and UCF) and pretty much everyone in Florida college administration is against it. I know Brogan thinks it's a terrible idea.

The state should build more community colleges and technical schools. Stop putting people in a university that don't have a burning desire to be there. You have too many apathetic students clogging up the arteries of Florida universities and they'd be better served in other avenues.
