One think I like I talked to a troy alum about was in bama, schools there let you pay In-Stete tuition rates if you join the marching band. Very cool anmd something FAU I fell NEEDS TO DO to get the Owls Marching Band up tp 200-300 members NOW.

I support this idea!

Hey Guys,

Just got back from the open house in Atlanta, nothing special yet functional. The open house attracted about 30 students and family members. The University had 3 representatives, 2 from Boca and 1 local. The slideshow presentation lasted about an hour with a short Q & A session. Overall very informative. They did have a couple small tables set up, one with food and the other with a brochures and gifts (lanyard).

One thing I did notice, out of state tuition sucks!

Thanks for the info. Is there something else you would have liked to see at the event? What was your overall impression of the event? This was our first year ever doing something like this so any feedback you have would be greatly appreciated!

Also, giving in-state tuition to band members sounds great..but isn't really that feasible. It's not like we can just say, "hey, you're going to get in-state tuition, don't worry about that extra $20K" That extra $20K still has to come from somewhere so it's not as easy as it might sound.

Re: FAU OPEN HOUSE IN ATLANTA

Any upcoming open houses in Texas? The school I work for does a cool event: alumni relations and admissions join up to invite alumni and incoming freshmen (and their parents) from the same city to events hosted in the city as a "send off." It helps freshmen from Houston, Dallas, etc. meet each other for car rides home together (maybe, but nowadays, a lot of students bring their own cars), parents meet each other, etc.

If FAU wants to host one in Texas, let me know and I will help with it.

Smitty, that's a GREAT idea. I'll pass it a long.

I don't think there's any more fairs going on this Spring but we'll be starting again in the Fall possibly. I'll definitely let everyone know about it.

Here's a list of places our Out-of-state recruiters were this Spring:

I like the idea but I think it would take a bill from the state legislature.

Ya, that's a great idea. But unbelievably unrealistic at FAU. We just don't have the money to award that many out-of-state credit waivers. It's not like we can just say, "Hey, you get to pay in-state tuition." That money still has to come somewhere. Think about it like this, the current out-of-state rate is $718 a credit. In-state is $199. That means that the University would be fronting the bill for that extra $519. So that's $6,228 a semester X whatever number students you have, we'll say 50. That's over $300K for just ONE semester.

Believe me, I'd love for that to happen but it's just not a feasible option.

Re: FAU OPEN HOUSE IN ATLANTA

Why is the university paying extra for these students to be here? Is there additional cost to have an out of state student on campus?

We are not getting as much money, yes, but there is no additional cost to the school, a person is a person.

A person is a person.. if they are Florida resident and have paid taxes (for at least a year) as a Florida resident. That's why there's a difference in prices. Private schools only have one price because they don't get state money, or at least not as much.
