FAU to trim $7 million from its budget

BOCA RATON — A possible $7 million cut to Florida Atlantic University's budget this spring could change the direction of the 43-year-old school as administrators weed out programs and positions they can no longer afford.

The prediction was made today by Board of Trustees Chairman Norman Tripp during a budget presentation where school officials said the $7 million cut would come on top of a more than $6 million reduction made in the fall.

The situation is so dire, said FAU President Frank Brogan, that "everything is on the table," including FAU's six smaller campuses that stretch from the Treasure Coast to Davie.

Maybe we can finally get rid of some of those "partner" campuses or just shrink them down to essentials. They're money pits.

For instance, Ft.Lauderale has criminal justice, business, journalism… we already have that in Boca. Talk about "duplication of services". Plus, they'd be better programs all-around if FAU could just focus everything in Boca. You can trim Ft.lauderdale down to be Architecture only (Boca should offer the full degree here; if they had, I'd be an architect right now). Jupiter should be "Honors" only, unless you want to move that program to Boca (smarter idea since it will give the Honors students a more traditional experience). Trim the Treasure Coast campus right out of there. HBOI and Davie should remain as research centers that only take on graduate students.

I know, I know, easier said than done. But students and faculty will adjust with advance warning.

I mean, look, I know FAU wants to provide all options to all people on the East Coast of Florida but you just can't do it all… it costs too much money, it spreads out resources and you shortchange the students at the non-Boca campuses of "the college experience."

Well, with journalism, many of the required classes are in Jupiter and Fort Lauderdale and not enough (or any) in Boca. Those classes should be given in Boca first, then if necessary, at the satellite campuses. Causing a Boca on-campus student to drive 30-50 miles for a class is not right.

To say the least. I know some people who have class on MWF in Jupiter and then TR classes in Davie. Come on.

I understand if there's something especially necessary/advantageous about the location… like the SeaTech campus for ocean engineering because it's on the water… but classes like criminal justice or philosophy or journalism – where you just need a professor and a classroom – can be duplicated anywhere.

Re: FAU to trim $7 million from its budget

Davie should stick to what its good at, which is taking BCC grads and getting them diplomas.  Classes should never be offered outside of boca that are necessary for a degree.  My gf is in journalism and has to go to Boca and Fort Lauderdale, silly.

I was an urban planning major and all my classes were in Fort Lauderdale, and for me that made sense.  The classes were at night so I could work the 9-5 and it is a "duh" moment to have urban planning in an urban center.  Architecture is set up pretty well I think, with the lower level courses being offered up in Boca (PBCC I think) while you get the basic requirements out of the way then you finish up everything in Fort Lauderdale.  That being said, Fort Lauderdale should kick out the BCC campus (except for architecture track students) and it should just be the College of Architecture, Urban, and Public Affairs.

I dont know much about Treasure Coast, and I think Jupiter is fine the way it is.  How about *gasp* students pay the a little closer to the actual value of a degree instead of paying the lowest tuition in the country?  And oh yeh stop voting for tax breaks that kill government funding.
