Guns on campus

How does everyone feel about this push to allow guns on college campuses especially the FAU campuses?

If only one of the victims had been packing cho may not of killed so many.  Banning guns only keeps lawabiding students from being able to carry a concealed weapon.  It does absolutely nothing to prevent a criminal or crazed lunatic from bringing a gun to school.  In an ideal world guns shouldn't be allowed on campus but guns are too readily available to make any banning of guns an effective solution.  It works in japan where guns are almost nowhere to be found, police don't even carry, but in the US it just won't work.  That's just my opinion and I know some people have strong opinions hopefully this discussion doesn't turn into a bunch of personal attacks.

Students- Not a fan too many are not on the right path or mature enough to trust with a gun.

Faculty- This MAY be a better way to go. With proper training and background checks this could make a difference in a bad situation.

I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick @$$ and I'm out of bubble gum.

Re: Guns on campus

Why on Earth would you need to carry a gun around? Hell no. Especially not on a college campus.

I am in Law Enforcement and I get 120 hours of firearms and defensive tactics training every year along with fellow agents.  I would have to say that even with all of the advanced training I would not be sure that 40% of my coworkers could respond in an appropriate measured response to a situation like you refer to.  Taking out a person that "has the drop on you" is not as simple as "oh look he has a gun.  I am going to be the hero and save everybody".  It is an intense mind blowing experience to shoot at another human being regardless of the situation. I don't think that a 18-22 year old untrained college student could even grasp the implications of their actions. The response (if any) would be to probably spray the target and anything near it in a frenzied, panicked mode. Thinking, I saw them hold the gun sideways like this on TV and it looked cool.  How would a kid handle knowing it was their rounds that killed the poor little coed.  Talk of allowing guns to be carried on campus is nothing short of madness.

What I hope for is "stiffer penalties for felons and Parole violators….. and world peace."  ;)

I'm only saying I would rather have a chance than just be automatically a victim.

Agreed.

This is a terrible idea and it's never going to be accepted by the relevant administrative people. Never in a million years.

I would have to agree with this response. With the minimal amount of hand gun training an 18-24 y/o student would get and to be put in a in a situation like VT or Northern Illinois would put everyone in danger. That would be an extremely high stressed situation that words can't describe. My heart would be pounding out of my chest if I had to exchange gun fire with a shooter and who knows what could go wrong. Police and law enforcement are highly trained to deal with those situations. I can't except that an 18 y/o with minimal or no training to be put in the same situation would know the right thing to do.
