98-02' guess i was ten years early…w/a 1-21 basketball team and no football, thank god for cooney.

Having to call all games at home up until 2000, I remember all of it far too well - especially the 99-00' season:

1997 - 1998 5-22 (Billerman)
1998 - 1999 6-20 (Billerman)
1999 - 2000 2-28 (Green)
2000 - 2001 7-24 (Green)
2001 - 2002 19-12 (Green)

At least you got to partake of the last year when they went to the dance! :)

No offense, and I mean it. But why does FAU always build their buildings to look exactly the same? They're all boxy and white/creamish. I might be mistaken, but I don't know if it's because it's the look the administration is going for, or if they're just always on budget constraints, but some color and design could go a long way. Either way, congrats on the gym and alumni center.

Re: Is there a Gym on campus?

It's actually pretty remarkable how buildings go up at FAU. They pour the walls flat on the ground and then tilt them to be upright. It's a fast (and thus cheap) way to create a structure. The downside is that the walls have to be completely flat.

Hey no worries… you're not the only one to have this issue. From my experiences talking to the university architect, it's not just a matter of budget constraints (although it's hard to argue that you should reduce, say, 50k sq ft of space from a building just so you can afford a non-functional aesthetic piece) but also a matter of the so-called "architectural harmony."

Since we have so many buildings on campus that were built in this style, we now have to perpetuate it otherwise (god forbid) the new building will look at odds with the rest of campus. It's this ingrained architectural "code" that everything seek to fit in well with the pre-existing surroundings. So in the Master Plan document, the architectural section discusses how there is a certain palette to be used and certain kinds of benches, windows, etc that are the "FAU style".

Wheras before we had drag buildings with shells/rock on the sides (popular in the 60's-70's architectural world back when they were built), the look of new buildings is now more contemporary…. more glass, wood mixed with tile, different lighting styles, etc. FAU won't be building anything out of red brick (ala FSU or UF) but they'll do something with interesting angles, lots of glass, pavers… the new Computer Science and Engineering building utilizes a lot of these design elements.

Very interesting, thanks for the response. From the pictures post earlier, the older buildings from the 60s and 70s look really interesting and stick out just because they're are different (not color wise), but it makes sense. FAU's been building like that for a while now that anything else wouldn't match. Thanks.

I asked Brogan. He said they'd never do that because of the cost of red brick in south Florida and the "architectural harmony" thing.

The cost of red brick sure didn't stop them from building THIS at FAU in Davie

so yeah  >:(
