New Aacademic Standards here at FAU

Just thought I would update everyone on how good the fall 2012 freshmen class is: Two seniors in high school were denied admission to FAU with high B GPA's and 1700s on the SAT.

Don't get excited, they must have had rap sheets.

I'll be interested to see the final numbers. Even if they're high, I expect the numbers to be high across the board at the Big Six (UF, FSU, FAU, FIU, UCF, USF).

NJOWL, you're starting this Fall, right? What's your intended major?

I am interested in a career in law, but do not see a point in getting a political science degree. I will likely major in Business Management and then go on to law school.

Try and do Accounting instead….I've heard it's intense but it can be very lucrative with a Law degree

How do they go well together? ahah. I am certainly open to accounting though, a double major is even possible.

Re: New Aacademic Standards here at FAU

I'll chime in here to shed some light and clear some stuff up..

illinoisowl is correct, a school's "standards" come from the application pool. If everyone who applies has a C average then that's who will get admitted. If everyone who applies has a 4.0, which is very common at UF then that is who you are competing against and that's where "standards" come in. There are state minimums for test scores and units but normally just meeting those requirements won't get you in.

Things are getting more and more competitive each year and FAU and this year it's even more competitive. I talk to parents every day that tell me their kids were admitted to FIU, UM, WVU, USF, LSU, Ole Miss,  just to name a few, that get denied from FAU. A lot of parents don't understand that their FAU denied them because remember, it's JUST FAU, right?

There are a lot of things that we look for when evaluating and some other schools may look for something else that we don't. Like someone said, it's all about whether we think you will be successful in college.

Good idea. Going to law school is a really, really bad idea right now and probably won't get better any time soon. Please read that article.

It's not just law: High-cost medical schools are starting to spring up all over the place too, despite a stable (or declining) number of residencies. My friend is graduating from pharmacy school and has limited job options too. Things are starting to thin out all over the place.

Needless to say, gotta have a good back-up plan. Business management will put you in the best position to earn income should law school not work out.

This will clear it up……

ERROR: A link was posted here (url) but it appears to be a broken link.

University of Florida - Admissions

Seems like FAU is the lowest in the state.  I remember when I was applying to different universities, you could have a C average and get into FAU.

Hmmm, the link says the minimum GPA to apply to FAU is a 2.6. I do believe that is the highest in the state. All the others including UCF is a 2.0. Go FAU! As a matter of fact, UCF has no specific minimum GPA to apply. It just says graduate from high school. FAU is the only one that requires more than just graduating from high school to apply.

I almost went to law school and by almost I mean put my deposit down and went to the orientation before deciding not to.  It was a very good decision.  Making $50k while owing $150k would have killed me.

Much better decision to just get an MBA.  If you're really set on law school be sure to go work at a law firm for a year before comitting.  Its nothing like Boston Legal.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

The school has come a long way regarding academic standards for entry.  Back in the 80's all you needed to get in was a pulse.

Notice he was careful to say "lowest" without saying lowest what.

Here's something else to consider with regard to the "average GPA": generally speaking, the Honors College students should have the highest GPAs of all admitted FTICs, right? At FAU for Fall 2011, there were 106 (3%) FTIC students in the Honors College, with 400 students overall.

What I'm getting at is that if we put more of an effort into recruiting and expanding enrollment for our Honors College, we could increase our average GPA considerably. The main problem is that FAU Honors is in Jupiter and thus disconnected from the main campus and all the trappings of a traditional college life.

This budget crisis threatening the downsizing/closing of campuses is a perfect time to bring the Honors College to Boca where it belongs.

UCF and UF both have theirs on the main campus and I imagine this plays a large part in the decision of potential students. I know it would for me.
