Seems like FAU is the lowest in the state.

Hmmm, the link says the minimum GPA to apply to FAU is a 2.6. I do believe that is the highest in the state.

Notice he was careful to say "lowest" without saying lowest what.

Here's something else to consider with regard to the "average GPA": generally speaking, the Honors College students should have the highest GPAs of all admitted FTICs, right? At FAU for Fall 2011, there were 106 (3%) FTIC students in the Honors College, with 400 students overall.

What I'm getting at is that if we put more of an effort into recruiting and expanding enrollment for our Honors College, we could increase our average GPA considerably. The main problem is that FAU Honors is in Jupiter and thus disconnected from the main campus and all the trappings of a traditional college life.

This budget crisis threatening the downsizing/closing of campuses is a perfect time to bring the Honors College to Boca where it belongs.

UCF and UF both have theirs on the main campus and I imagine this plays a large part in the decision of potential students. I know it would for me.

I don't think he knows the difference between actual "standards" and just selecting the best applicants.  FAU says we won't even look at your application unless you have at least a 2.6 gpa. All the other universities in the state will actually accept applications from anyone who just graduates. Is it possible to graduate with less than a 2.0? Can you graduate with a D? Just to be realistic, we know the odds of getting accepted by UF with a C average is pretty low but their written "standards" say they will accept applications from anyone who graduates.

They do that for athletics and so their donors relatives can all get in

I agree with you but I'm sure nearly everyone would argue that the end result is more important since that's what get's published in ranking magazines. However, if we continue to increase our minimum standard from 2.6 to 2.8 and then eventually 3.0, we would also increase our overall GPA (in theory).

However, I don't know if FAU would ever have the cojones to raise it all the way to 3.0, even if we all agree that's where it probably should be to be successful in college.

LOL not saying footballs are not smart but that would put a damper on our recruiting efforts…2.6 is good

Wow, quite the article. I understand law school is a huge risk, but I WANT a career in law and am interested in it.

Also, raising the minimum GPA does absolutely nothing but eliminate athletes from attending our university. The only way to increase a class profile is by increasing the applicant pool's academics. That will surely happen given our growing reputation, area, and the campus itself.

Re: New Aacademic Standards here at FAU

Besides allowing lower gpa's to get in, more importantly to the school, is how many more application fees they can accept with the lower gpa standard for applcation standards only. They can always reject 20,000 aps a year but keep the ap. fee. (adds an extra cool mil to your school budget just for the right to say no thanks). That also raises your "selectivity" rating as you only accpet 5,000 out of 30,000 to "appear" very selective in your admissions standards.

Re: New Aacademic Standards here at FAU

FAU doesn't have a minimum GPA, not many schools do, at least not state universities in Florida. A lot of college use a mid-range or middle 50% score as you can see here (FAU - Freshman Requirements) That means that the majority of students who get admitted to FAU fall within this range. The 25% below that are a lot of athletes and special circumstances and then there are the 25% who get admitted above that.
