President Saunders Resigns

You only really have two options when it comes to university presidents, guys like Brogan (social, affable, political and typically disliked by the academic community) and women like MJ (academics, usually focused on the academic standing of the school and getting research dollars, typically adored by the profs). Where MJ ran into trouble is that she was president at a time where we could've used that PR machine President and she tried to do it but just didn't have the skill set. She drove hard to advance our athletics and enrollments but in the process drew the ire of the academics and when the PR debacles began she found herself on an island. MJ would've been successful at a different time where she could've done the things she would have excelled at, too bad, just the wrong time for her here.

The next move we make is a big one. Brogan 2.0 would be nice. Lets see if we can run this search better than the last

Solid post. Agree with you on all points.

Regarding her accomplishments, the advantage of being in an administrative position is being able to take some credit for anything that occurs under your tenure.

For instance, according to the President's Biography page, MJS "began serving as the President of Florida Atlantic University on June 7, 2010." The Sun Sentinel reported on May 16th, 2010 (a month before she started) that "FAU's doctor of medicine program received final approval on Saturday" so to say she "launched the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine" is a little generous, though she certainly may have fostered relationships with hospitals and physicians afterwards, absolutely.

It also states that "more than 7,500 applications have been received over a three-year period, enabling the University to select nationally competitive students to fill the 64 slots that are available annually" which would be more impressive if it wasn't for the fact that all medical schools everywhere get this number of applications and are able to select from "nationally competitive students." Typically the amount received is 3k-5k applications, a third of those get secondary applications (1000+), a third of those secondary applicants get interviews (300+), and a third of the interviewees (100+) get admitted. That happens even at new medical schools that are still in preliminary accreditation status.

However, I did not know that "FAU has become the most selective institution in the State University System"

Looked into it and in 2012:
- FAU admitted 35%
- USF 38%
- UNF 39%
- FIU 40.4%
- UF 40.8%
- FSU 52.9%
- New College 56.2%
- UWF 63%
- FGCU 67.1%

Wow, that's cool.

Hundreds of people.

President of any major university is a desirable job.  Most of the time, these jobs are available only because some negative things have occured…and you have to remember the type of people that go after these jobs are successful because they believe that they are the exact right person to turn bad situations around.

Besides, FAU isn't really a "bad situation".  We've had a few months of bad PR, but there is plenty of good here to work with.

Now if only we can we get the President up in DC to make the same decision ;)

Ugh…Do some people really have to bring politics into EVERYTHING?

Lighten up…….

This IS political.

The position is appointed (political), and ends when a (political) body doesn't like the end results.

Just like with the American People.

So what if he made a joke…….

(maybe you just don't like the subject matter)

;)

Re: President Saunders Resigns

There will definitely be some stigma attached to the job (even Dr. Brown was told not to come here when he applied, and IIRC several of the Director of Student Media applicants bowed out after getting the same advice)

however

anyone with a Ph.D. who wants to make $325k+ plus benefits will still want this job, stigma or no stigma.

We're going to need a Brogan/Chun type of person as the next President. Someone fearless and proactive.

There is a MAJOR difference between the two and you know it.  When was the last time you voted for FAU President?

The subject matter here is FAU's President…not National Politics.

I got that he was trying to make a joke (albeit one that isn't particularly funny).  Honestly, my political affiliation isn't the issue (I was hardly offended by the comment…I just found it inappropriate here).  The problem is that he threw something into this thread that will only result in (intentionally) pissing half the people reading it off.  Nobody here knows my political views because it's none of their business and I don't want to hear everyone else's when talking about FAU Athletics (or in this case who runs the University).  It serves no purpose in this discussion.  If you want to have a political discussion, go ahead.  We have other forums on this very site to do so.  I don't think I'm being unreasonable or need to "lighten up"…when am I ever "up tight" here?  We've all seen on the Internet that some people feel the need to turn EVERY discussion (no matter the topic) into a political fight.  It's obnoxious and I'd prefer that it not happen here.

Interesting note from BocaNewsNow:

"President Saunders will be returning to a faculty position and be assigned a special research project – to assess the feasibility of developing a physician’s assistant (PA) program at FAU."

That seems like a good role for her.  She's always seemed very likeable…just not a great leader.

It pays almost a half million a year plus perks…someone will want it  and someone good will want the challenge.

It's pun…not sure why you are so offended, but your position and I respect that…

Will close on this:

If I spent all of my time moderating all of the posts in this forum for 100% validity regarding thread topic/argument (yours included) it would be a full time job……..
