President Saunders Resigns

No one should get too excited just yet… My guess is that we won't have a new president until Jan 2014. We have an interim interim president right now, this fall we'll have an officially interim one and this search will likely take 6 mos.

All of the official action centers around BOT meetings which aren't that regular.

Yep.

In case you're hazy on the process, FAU usually selects an outside consulting firm to pull in candidates, whittle it down to a short-list, then make a recommendation… at that point it turns over to the BOT itself, which goes through their own process to whittle the firm's short-list down to 2-3 people… and then there's several days of administrator interviews, campus visits, student meet-and-greets, etc

It's an extensive process. And even after a President is selected and agrees to come here, there can be a month or so gap before that person is actually physically here, on the job, acting in the capacity as the President.

About once a month but they can (and do) come together more often for special events like contract approvals.

The next full board meeting was supposed to be September 23-24, 2013 for their BOT Retreat but I think what they'll do is meet either this month or next month to agree on a Presidential Search Committee and put up a call for applications on the FAU website. They could theoretically get together a search committee in June and then give it three months (June-July-August-September, say applications close September 1st) to search for candidates and then the committee could present their recommendations to the BOT on Sept.23rd

…however…

FAU is traditionally unimpressed with the pool of candidates it gets for nearly every position it advertises for and extends the application period, so  even that three months may not be enough time. In addition, the BOT Retreat is an important Strategic Planning event for the entire future of the university and its agenda cannot be monopolized by the Presidential search. So I'm thinking we probably interview October-Novemberish and give the new President the month of December to get their affairs in order so they can be here for Spring Semester in January.

Re: President Saunders Resigns

I had the opportunity this weekend to meet the interim President, discuss where FAU is, where we're going, the changing landscape of college education, and the win in budget appropriations.  We are in good hands while he is steering the ship and I trust he will make the right decisions that have to be made during his tenure, however long it will be.

Not only did he hold the audiences attention and come off very easy and personable at the main event I attended, later on I spent a solid 45 minutes with him at a more intimate venue with a smaller group of alums and he was very engaging and pleased to speak with everyone.  I'm not saying he's the guy, but for someone with a finance background, he is very social and outgoing.

I'm very curious to see how this progresses and learn the slate of candidates that are put forward in the future.  I will not comment on Saunders resignation as I have made my feelings known previously.

Is he in the running to remove the interim tag and keep the job?

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

Re: President Saunders Resigns

That bio doesn't indicate a phd. I know FAU took some flack for Brogan for not having a phd dispite his performance.  I'm sure that would be a consideration if he applied for the president's position.

Here's some info on him.

Might not actually be a bad idea. That tactic worked very well for UCF (President Hitt was former mayor of Orlando)

He has a law degree but not a Ph.D., for what that's worth… illinoisowl is right about the Brogan flack thing. I think Brogan was in the middle of getting a Ph.D. at Lynn U when he got the call up to Tally.
