Proposed Senate Budget Cuts

So a third of our budget would be cut..would we even be able to survive that? Where do you cut that much money and still have a functioning university?

Re: Proposed Senate Budget Cuts

So 220 make $100K or more. Now to some cutting them may seem a good idea but how does that then afect the quality of education at the University, something that FAU has been striving to improve over the years and it is working! Second, it these high end people are cut, (or even the lower end below $100K), how does either affect the local economy and real estate market? Does Boca or Palm Beach and Broward Counties want hundreds of new foreclosures to deal with and further drive down the real estate market and thus the local tax base!
These is a lot to be condsidered and I hope cooler, smarter heads get involved immediately!

Re: Proposed Senate Budget Cuts

I wonder how many people would be effected by this. I've worked at FAU for almost a year..can I be grandfatherd in? lol. They need to find out how many people would be effected and then come up with a report that shows how the local economy would be hit as well.

Given the influx in interest, HIGHLY doubt you are in jeopardy…

Hopefully!

You made a comment earlier in the Conference Changes thread about how you could assure that our incoming class would have much higher test scores. Can you elaborate? For instance, what do you think the final GPA will be and are we already in waitlist mode here in February?

Not to be inbsensitive, but the delimna is pretty simple: when you get used to handouts, you end up with a poorly run system.

There is no profit accountability, as in the private sector. As a result, your budget is not tied to true demand, but rather social "goodwill" from the hand of the Government.

This is why you do not hear of these types of things in a private University setting.

"In fulfillment of its promise to put a university education within the reach of everyone in South Florida who has the desire and the ability to earn a four-year degree"

You dont hear of these things with private universities because they dont serve the same purpose as a public university.  I am sure St. Andrews middle school faces different challanges than Boynton Beach Middle School…doesn't mean that making all schools private is the right thing to do.

That comment in quotes is VERY important to our community.  Whatever they need to do to keep the promise of that quote is fine with me.

Re: Proposed Senate Budget Cuts

This needs to be screamed into the politicians faces in Tallahassee…some people let thier own beliefs get in the way of reality.  Unbelievable.

A study released late last year shows that FAU contributes $4 billion to the economy of its six-county service region, and that figure promises to grow as our medical school continues its development and our new football stadium becomes an active hub of sports activities. By every measure, FAU is poised to advance to a whole new level of service, contributing to the strong educational infrastructure that is needed for Florida to make the critically important transition from an economy reliant on agriculture and tourism to one based on the clean industries that are emerging from 21st-century technologies. But FAU's growth - and the growth of our entire economy - will be stopped in its tracks if the Senate moves forward with its shortsighted, destructive and ultimately self-defeating slashing of the higher education budget.

Re: Proposed Senate Budget Cuts

Most research professors pay themselves out of their research work(a lot of professors are paid on a 9 month schedule and have to supplement research funds for the 3 months), this is why you see very high salaries for some professors. If they don't want to  teach summers or classes during the semester then they must buy out that time mostly using research grant dollars. These totals are shown in their salaries but the portion put up by the state besides benefits is significantly less than it shows. This is for some cases. When the state sets aside money for programs and the timelines are left open is where the problem is, the Universities know what they have on hand and how long they can keep certain programs running and carries the remainder forward every year. If the state comes in and just decides we're going to take that remaining balance back this does not give the University stability to handle programs. The outcome could be that more money will be spent (squandered) by Universities in fear that they are going to loose remaining balance "taken back" from the state every year. In return the Universities might have quick growths in some areas but not enough funds to keep them stable depending on future budgets. Which could degrade our University System.

Agree, but they also post a profit and escape the "hand of leaness" passing over.

Don't get me wrong, love my school and always will…just a shame that this is happening.
