Re: Prowlers

I vote to move this thread out of FAU Football since it's getting really annoying and it has nothing to do with football anymore.

FAU desperately needs the Prowlers.

That said, I was *extremely* upset to read that SGA gave $5000 to the Prowlers to attend a recent away game. It totally escapes me why student fees should be used to pay for other student fans to attend games. $5000 is far more than most academic clubs receive for the entire year at FAU. It's unconscionable to spend that amount of money to send students to cheer the team. We need a good travel contingent for away games, but people should pay their own way (and I do know that the Prowlers raise external funds). FAU's mission is NOT to pay for students to attend away games.

Even the band cannot get funding to travel to all away games.

Any such funding would have been far more appropriately spent in support of graduate travel grants, which have been severely limited and rarely come close to funding a trip to a conference. There is no way to justify denying FAU's researchers the ability to present papers at conferences in order to send fans to a football game.

Our student government has a great history of keeping close knit groups of friends together and spending the students money.  Used to have trips to Theme Parks where everyone knew each other.  Pablo Paez is my little brother in the Fraternity and I was there too when the Prowlers were founded…at first it just seemed to be matching t-shirts for everyone who already went to the games, ….and the idea of the Prowlers seems to have a lot of promise….but Student Government seems to be missing some stuff here.  ..But
At least they aren't riding around in their "own personal" FAU funded Golf Carts with their initials on them, like some had done in the past.

I have to agree that the $5000 could have gone a long way to helping the whole band instead of just a few students.

Re: Prowlers

I don't know enough about the PrOWLers to make any comments, positively or negatively, about them, but I remember being a part of the good ole' Owl Corral back in the day when FAU let home fans sit behind the visitor's bench at hoops games and give them hell for 40 minutes. Coaches and players from visiting teams would get very frustrated by us and I remember getting yelled at by at least one coach and having gum thrown at us. Then one day they stopped letting home fans sit behind the visiting bench and that was the end of that. Boo political correctness…hooray semi-derogatory chants!

One question I do have is about these supposed NCAA rules against cheering? Are the only for people on the actual sideline I presume?

Re: Prowlers

Yes. Because prOWLers are on the field, they have to watch what they say. In the case of the microphone, since it broadcasts out to the stands, they can only speak during certain times.

Re: Prowlers

smitty,

Student Organizations can rent cars and its actually very easy to do.  So don't go with the **** about them not being able to rent a car. You do not have to be 25 just have to have a valid driver license and be put on a tar.  A student can be reimbursed for gas and meals if you put it on the tar. I was actually part of the COSO board that approved this 5k ,but i believe it was too much.  227 dollars a person is a bit too much. I took 15 people last year to Virginia for under 3k and that counted hotel rooms and rental vans.

Thanks for the clarification. I am going off of what I have been told by administrators who said they can not rent cars. Why didn't you suggest renting cars instead of a mini-bus?

Re: Prowlers

i actually did, but no one listened to me and i was out voted. I'm actually off the coso board now. There will be a new board in the spring. Smitty, gas can also be refunded. I still think if the prowlers can cancel the bus and get vans it be cool to have a huge convoy to troy. For 5k you can get like 15 vans easily. 160 for the rental and like 150 for the gas. And that would be a scary convoy to pull into a tailgate. FAU would have a definite presence when pulling into the stadium.
