Sifting through the haze...

what's the point of joining a fraternity?
anyone?

I think people join fraternities for different reasons, many desire acceptance within a popular group, some yearn for the camaraderie that they had from being on a sports team or clubs in high school, and others desire exposure to leadership roles and the potential springboard that some fraternities can provide. I think when a fraternity is run the right way, the members benefit greatly from the experience it provides.

Yes, there is a wonderful social side to being in a fraternity. Not many times in your life will you get to go to a luau themed social with a group of young women in bikinis ranging in age from 18-22, that part is great.  ;)  But I'd say the best part of being in a fraternity in college, is the moment you realize that the work you've put into running the organization, with a budget of thousands of dollars and a membership constituent demanding results for the investment they've made, is that you are better prepared than joe college student to enter the business world. I am confident that I am where I am today because of the leadership training, management, and social interaction that my college fraternity provided me.

You'll be hard pressed to find an 18 year old that's mature enough to understand what a fraternity can really provide them with, infact, you'd be hard pressed to find a member that can really express what a fraternity provides! So a lot of times, they join because they want to go to parties and play sports, but who didn't when they were 18. The hope is that along the way, they get the rest of the experience and become a future leader. Sadly, fraternities lose sight of the bigger picture and things like hazing become part of the process which ruins it for everyone.
