UCONN-style Greek Amphitheater proposed for FAU
I assume you mean the Hellenic Society Paideia of South Florida Inc., which also funded "a visiting assistant professor of classics and modern Greek for three years… {teaching} classical Greek, modern Greek and literature courses such as classical myth and classical drama."
I see they have a location in Boca Raton, which explains "Why FAU?"
Then I found this pdf which explains, in part:
A proposed 8,000 square foot building for Hellenic Studies Paideia on the Boca Raton campus will give an identity to the Classical Studies Program at FAU. A prime parcel of land at the main entrance of the university is allocated to this initiative and remains dedicated space on FAU's master plan. The building (phase I) will be constructed in close proximity to the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters providing classroom space for courses taught in the Classical Studies Program, office space for those who teach in the program, conference space, library and exhibition space. Following the construction of the building, an open-air theater (phase II) located adjacent to the building is envisioned.
I also found this:
"In 1990, the university provided a parcel of land for the construction of a 20,000 square foot Byzantine-style educational center, called "Macedonia," and a Greek Orthodox Chapel, "The Three Hierarchs." An open-air theater is presently in the pre-construction phase….
We are now in the process of establishing a physical presence of Hellenism at Florida Atlantic University. A prime parcel of land, at the main complex of the university, was allocated to us in order to build a 14,000 square foot complex, the Hellenic Society Paideia "Aristotle Center," and an outdoor classical theater. The center will not only give identity to the Classical Studies Program, but will also provide classroom space for courses taught in the department, office space, conference space, a library, a museum, and an exhibition area, as well as a Greek Orthodox chapel, the Transfiguration, that will represent the Byzantine era of Hellenism.
On April 8th, 2000, His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America led the celebration of an Agiasmos service on the designated grounds of Florida Atlantic University. Everyone present showed his or her generosity on this occasion. But our efforts do not end here. We need to raise over $2,500,000.00 for the completion of the Center."
Wow. Wonder if they hit their mark.
Now we just need to know if the FAU amphitheater is going to become a reality and when…
