Warning: Anthony Majhess running for Boca Mayor

I don't think the majority of FAU students are fooled by this phony false flag  "Warning" as it's an inside job as most negative statements about Boca politics posted here are. If there were anything to be worried about we would have heard it before this post from team Susan's dirty work guys. The only time the two Susan's show up anywhere is for the photo OP or when there is something in it for them. As the locals know the only council member on the side of the people instead of greedy developers is just one, Anthony. He was elected by citizens across the city and they are not in unions. He won by over 1,000 votes and if you are not a complete idiot you know Boca is not a union town. This isn't Detroit. Anthony won the last election because the people who love and care for this city do not have a voice when 4 of the 5 council members shut out the voters. They give the same small but powerful group of developers priority and almost exclusive unbridled control of the city shutting out other developers year after year. And by design the heart of downtown was allowed to die so developers could manipulate the zoning and overbuild taking the money and running. This is your wakeup call. In one case Susan Haynie + the Mayor, her developer friends and 2 council members tried to sneak in a giant zone violating traffic dense project without impact or traffic studies or input from the community.  Watch this video to see who stood up for the people when they tried to get answers calling out the city council for manipulating the voters and denying their freedom of speech. It was not Susan Haynie.

… FAU students are smarter than that & they can educate themselves away from this false flag ridiculous manipulation of a warning.

Here's an idea for ALL you political jack a$$es (both parties)…

Understand your audience!  Instead of always using negative reinforcement against the competition, why don't you understand what is important to the audience and offer something positive about how you will impact that?

This is (for the most part) a pro-FAU discussion forum.  If you can't figure that out, you should go over to the Miami Dolphins forum and tout the virtues of the NY Jets.

Wow you really know how to win people over to your side.  You and Anthony obviously read the book How to Win Friends and Influence People.

As far as Boca being a union town, no one said Boca was a union town (thank the Lord)  they are the numbers that put him over the top and promoted him all over the place prior to the election.

Get a grip downtown clown.

GO OWLS!

Just for the record, most of the comments are positive about Boca Raton City Management.

You can't take one thread and base your entire opinion on it because you disagree with content; which happens to not support your candidate of choice obviously.

Right, the only negative things I read on here are about old hat trying to keep Boca like Port St. Lucie.  This town has evolved (against some) and needs to continue on that path.  Boca Raton isn't and shouldn't be an old retirement town.  Any efforts to halt the city's progress should be seen in a negative light in my opinion.

The city has been/is evolving the same way FAU is.  Most people on this board want to see this continued progress including myself.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

Not every issue about FAU here. I support reasonable construction near campus. At the same time I dont support unlimited building downtown. The Boca politicians love posing for the photo ops but these are the same people who blamed FAU for years for the traffic on glades road and delayed our stadium for years.

The attacks on Mahjess have nothing to do with FAU and everything to do with the upcoming boca mayor election.

Im hoping that both sides can keep their statements factual and FAU related.

I am a florida native, my family has been in this county for over 100 years, my father was on the first
faculty, I am an FAU alumni and my family are season ticket holders.

If I want Boca Raton to be a nice place to live that doesnt mean I hate FAU. If I want FAU students to have both on and off campus housing options that doesnt mean I want Boca to be like Fort Lauderdale or south beach.

I don't know why Bocaites wanted a fun, exciting, place to go . A place with great bars and eateries. A place to take friends and hang out in a cool atmosphere. A place where the residents love the lights and noise. They have had it for years. It is called DELRAY. I hate political talk. Even when it involves FAU.

Nice quick piece from the SS to build on what I was arguing earlier:

Off-campus housing a boon for Boca firm

By Paul Owers, Sun Sentinel

December 15, 2013

The semester ended Friday at Florida Atlantic University, but there won't be much of a holiday break for the off-campus housing division at Florida's Best Realty Services.

The Boca Raton-based firm will be working with FAU students scrambling to put roofs over their heads by the time classes resume next month.

Over the next 45 days, Florida's Best expects to arrange 150 student leases — about triple its normal business, co-founder Marshall Sklar said.

FAU has room for about 4,000 students on the Boca Raton campus, but many FAU undergrads end up getting their own place after about a year, Sklar said.

Within 2 miles of campus, a one-bedroom apartment rents for about $950 a month, Sklar said. If students look north to Delray Beach or Boynton Beach, they usually can find a one-bedroom for $875, he said.

The niche business helps Florida's Best get through the holiday season, when home sales soften.

"I wouldn't say 'screeching halt,' but it is significantly slower this time of year," Sklar said.

FAU has repeatedly and officially stated they do not support off campus private dormitories.  I have been the lone vote in support of FAU's wishes.  Its amazing how disingenuous people can turn a story around.  -Anthony Majhess

Actually, you might have been in support of what the university wants, but the only reason the university doesn't want off campus housing is because it hurts their profits…….. About 2 years ago, I sat in a meeting where you STRONGLY advocated against University Park because FAU said they didn't need it and you didn't think it was necessary… I was one of the students that went to speak to you guys. One thing that I didn't even mention (I didn't know it was an issue until after you brought it up afterwards), FAU supposedly said they only had 90% occupancy that year… During the first 3 weeks of the fall semester, there were almost 500 students who were in a hotel because FAU didn't have enough space for them. Although they have the new dorms, the issue is that there isnt AFFORDABLE housing on or around campus…. My freshman year I stayed in IRT and paid almost $1100 per month for my dorm (that was 2 years ago, and since then, they've raised the housing costs). Off-campus housing will HOPEFULLY force FAU to lower their fees.

With that being said, FAU is going to grow regardless of any opposition. Even if the numbers of students don't grow, the quality of students (and their expectations) will grow. They're going to want more stuff to do, more CHEAPER housing, and more everything. The question however, is HOW it's going to grow. Resisting the growth is going to hurt Boca… It's going to backfire because there wont be "student-friendly" places, and students are going to literally INVADE all of Boca. The most recent stat (don't quote me on this because I don't know how accurate it is) is that 1/3 residents of Boca is a student… In the coming years, we're going to have less commuters and more students who want to live IN Boca… If off-campus housing is not an option, they're going to rent houses in your precious little gated communities and cause more problems. Instead, you should be ADVOCATING Glades-Spanish River and 95-Federal all be the "college town" part of Boca and you can contain the craziness. I'd also like to mention that the more students that live in one area, the less complaints there are - that's because students are different. We're not evil and I can assure everyone that we don't have the intentions of destroying our neighbors lives, student schedules are just DIFFERENT. They want to be around each other, so let them be around each other. With that being said, the RAPID development of 20th Street (into University Boulevard) is in the best interest of every single person who has a vested interest in Boca (whether you love FAU or hate it), it solves everyones problems. I wrote an article about it on my Boca Students blog already, you can check it out here: Boca's Direction: College Town or Nursing Home City? - Boca Students

Sorry for the rant guys!

Ah yes.

I believe you are referring to a line from my blog here (that has since moved here to this site) that explained, "In the 2010 Census, the population of Boca Raton was found to be 84,392 (growth: 12.9% from 2000-2010). A surprising 33.4% of Boca citizens - or 28,186 people - were under the age of 29 (what we'll call "college", "graduate" or "young professional" age)."

It is accurate. You can Google it.

The more impressive figure is the previous line, "Ergo, on a given weekday, there are up to 41,000 college students in Boca Raton."
