LOL

I'm just pointing out that FAU wouldn't say "no" to "free advertising" unless there was another catch.

People on this board were critical of FAU's marketing efforts and not putting signs up on Glades to advertise for the game, but it recently came to light that the City of Boca threatened to fine them. There was also a lot of talk about FAU not doing enough to secure $20 million from a company for a stadium (about six - eight months ago), but that also came to light when RCB pulled out of a deal that was on the table.

I like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, especially FAU.

Just a little ribbing but you handle it well and I agree with you, it is very easy to be critical when you don't have all of the facts

Can someone then tell us why they would turn them down?

It's stipulated in the contract that YOUniversity will not show the featured school in a negative light. Despite this, FAU wanted creative control over what content went in and what did not. The website didn't give this right to any other school (Stanford, Cornell, etc) so they weren't going to give it to FAU.

Apparently, they tried to work it out 3 or 4 times since FAU is around the corner and at least a handful of the site's staff graduated from FAU. The school just got too demanding so the YOUniversity people backed off. In their view, there are plenty of other colleges to cover across the nation and perhaps even internationally. They're not going to spend all their time dwelling on us.

There are no future plans to highlight FAU.

Hello,
I tried to see the FAU virtual tour, but I found an error.
Does FAU have a virtual tour ?
I think FAU is a great school becoming very popular and they should
have a virtual tour.

thanks
Alejandro

I'm sorry, FAU does not want a video tour of their school.  We find
this astounding considering the campus is less than 10 miles form
YOUniversityTV's headquarters and all hosts and many crew members
graduated from FAU.

Send an e-mail to FAU.

Hello again,
Was it Frank Brogan who rejected this or the marketing department.
Who wouldn't like to expose their school especially now when FAU is doing so
well.
This is a window for more students to come to our school; therefore, more
money for the school.
I checked your website, and I think you are doing a great job.
I will try to contact the school.
Does the school have to pay for this ?

thanks again,

This is what they answered:

You hit the nail right on the head.  There are absolutely NO costs to the
school.  We provide everything.  We were working with a person named Randy
Goin who I believe is in communications.

YOUniversity
we put YOU in university

Sooo, I wrote to FAU this:

Dear Marketing Dept,
My name is Alex and I graduated in 2006. I visited the site
www.youniversity.tv and I did not see the FAU virtual tour. All the
florida schools had one except us.
I spoke to the crew from this company, and they told me you did not
want their services.
It is really shocking to me especially now when the school is doing
so well and we need more popularity to attract more students.
The virtual tour services are free. Why FAU did not want to do this ?
I believe this brings more students; therefore, more money.
Most of the hosts and crew attended FAU.
Why is FAU not supporting the alumni, you know they would an
exceptional job.
I will be writing to Frank Brogan about this issue.

thanks

This is what FAU answered:

Hello Alejandro-

We agree that the project seems quite promising. Our only concern has been
that when they start selling advertising space on the site, FAU has no way
of asking for our video to be removed if there is an ad we object to. While
we are confident they would steer clear of the obvious pitfalls such as
alcohol- or tobacco-related ads, we want to protect the University's
reputation from the less obvious possibilities that are out there. For
example, if a student loan company advertises on the site and they turn out
to be a bad company, we would not want to associate FAU with that. Since
there are so many "unknowns" when it comes to advertising, we are very
cautious regarding FAU's brand.

We have had several discussions with youniversity.tv, but have yet to come
to agreement on that. I still hope that we will.

Thanks again for your input,

Randy

Re: Web Site Offers Prospective Students Virtual Tour of Major Colleges

I see where FAU is coming from with this concern.

Schools are steering away from these types of things. If they can't control what their brand (our brand = FAU) is tied to, either directly or indirectly, some people may tie FAU with whatever ads are on there, whether or not the tie should be made.

Example, and I'm making this up - THIS IS NOT TRUE - it's an exaggeration to show a possible example:
XYZ university contracts with Google Ads or another ad company, which rotates their ads on different web sites. A new web site geared towards adult entertainment contracts an ad company to sell their rotating banner ads on their web site. XYZ university pops up on the web site, making it APPEAR that the university is endorsing the site.

Now, I'm sure YOUniversity would not have done something like this. But… as a general rule of thumb, it seems that university, at least the ones I've worked at, want to be able to control where their name is advertised. And I can't say I don't blame them for wanting to do that. We protect our personal names and what we sign our name too… why wouldn't a business or university do the same.

Just include an "opt out" clause...if they air anything of objection, FAU can opt out...im sure the Company would have no problem with this.

That is the lamest excuse Ive ever heard there are hundreds of schools on there and we are the only to worry about that type of advertisement thats stupid none of the others schools seem to have a problem with it even if they do put that stuff on their website it will effect every school. FAU has way more to lose by not putting a video up they having a video and them advertising drugs and hookers. This really pisses me off!!!!!!!

To each their own, owlcountry40. It wasn't an excuse, but rather an offer to view it in the shoes of someone else.

Re: Web Site Offers Prospective Students Virtual Tour of Major Colleges

I agree that there are two sides to every story.  However, I think the University needs to branch out on this.  The "bad image" scenario seems way too far fetched.  An athletics department  or administrative scandal would be far more damaging to a Universities image then being  on the same site as a shady advertisement.

How about this?  FAU has a contract with Nike to make athletics gear right?  It's a well known fact that Nike uses overseas factories to make their products to save on production costs.  Nike and companies like it have for years been targets of human rights groups.  The workers in these factories have no employee rights and usually make less than a dollar a day (pretty much slave labor).  So by Mr. Goin's logic FAU could be perceived as supporting sweatshop labor practices.  Am I right?
