Which FAU Student Union design do you like better?

Just give us several hundred million bucks and give us the power to change the campus for the better, and FAU won't regret it!  ;D

And I see it now, thanks Boozie and Doc! The only problem I have with that plan is that the SO is one of the newst buildings at FAU, have we even paid it off yet? I say move Admin to the UC, beat keep the barber shop, Outakes, TechU, etc... in the front of the "new Admin." I do love the idea of moving the Bookstore to the Breezeway Foodcourt for a new 2 story bookstore, but then what would the old bookstore become? Maybe the new SU could have about 5 food options, and the old bookstore location could have 2-3? This way campus will remain expanded, and not the majority of food vendors to be put away from the Breezeway.

I've herd stories about SO that the star ship enterprise  had bad cracking and was structurally fine right now but would be a problem in the future. I don't  know the exact age of SO its been there for the last 12 years I've been around FAU.

The SO is definitely an older building - it was dedicated on November 1990.

I can't confirm whether it's paid off or not, although it "only" cost ~$9M at the time and I'm pretty sure how it works is that the Legislature pays for academic buildings over a span of 2-3 years. FAU puts in a budget request for say $40M and the state says, okay, we've budgeted to give you $20M in 2012, $10M in 2013 and $10M in 2014. At least, that's what the CIP plans suggest.

The only buildings we should still owe money on are dorms and athletic arenas, which derive revenue so the state doesn't pay for those.

Anyway, the SO building had some structural problems, it's true, which is why there are some kinda awkward metal supports that were added to it recently.

Personally I don't see Administration being too happy about moving to SO. These are people that constantly submit requests for Minor Projects costing tens of thousands of dollars for various things. For instance, right now they've got a line item for $300,000 for an "in-house study upgrades for surfaces and furniture, Rm 305, BOT Board Room."

300 grand to redo some surfaces and furniture.

There are three more line items about new carpet, paint, frosted glass, partitions, renovations, etc without prices. Meanwhile the BOT is wondering about ways to "cut spending" because of the budget hit - maybe not spend 300 grand on surfaces and furniture right now?

Point is, I can't see these people being too thrilled about moving into a 22 year old building with structural issues.

Oh, no, I meant the "food court" in the new building design (which is just a concept at this point and a lot can change, remember) should be switched out to become a 2-3 story bookstore. That space in the new building. The existing Breezeway Cafe would stay as it is; they spent like $2M to change the Breezeway Cafe into what it is now, pretty sure they don't want to move/change it any time soon.

Right, I mean, most universities have an expansive food court in their expansive student unions, it's true. But because of our odd setup, with the Student Union being where it is and most of the activity being on the Breezeway, we built it over by the Breezeway, and we just spent a lot of money to make it into the same kind of mall-style food court we would have put in a new student union anyway. That's all I'm saying: no need to build the same thing again a couple hundred feet away.

Ahh I see. Sorry, spent the entire day at the Lib so I was pretty dead last night. I would still like one or two food options in the "new SU" just because we'll need them down the line as the campus keeps growing. Plus, I'm just tired of going to the mall for Chik Fil A.

Np.

Don't get me wrong, it would be stupid to open a building like this without at least some food in it, so they probably would. I just don't think it makes sense to build a new food court, or move the old one here.

Chick-fil-a, 100 Montaditos, Denny's (FSU has one), Chili's Too, an Indian restaurant, a vegetarian place (like Salad Creations)… those would all be good choices. And of course FAU needs another coffee place.

I'd also like to see them replace Chick-n-grill with Pollo Tropical, at least in the Engineering building.

Things that students might want but wouldn't make sense on campus: Sweet Tomatoes, a grocery store like Publix, a nightclub, indoor skate park, etc
