FAU softball had a disappointing day on Thursday, dropping a pair of contests to Ball State 5-3 and Pitt 7-1.

“We need to do a better job hitting,” said Joan Joyce, FAU’s head coach. “We didn’t adjust…they were two good teams tonight. Both their records coming in were good…We have to do a better job of not taking ourselves out of the game. That is what happens.”

The Owls took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third against Ball State and held that lead until the top of the sixth when Ball State retook the lead and then added an additional two runs in the seventh. Madisyn Palmer led off the bottom half of the seventh with a single. A Ball State error, put Palmer on third and Samantha Lagerye on second with no outs. On a pitch that alluded BSU’s catcher, Palmer tried to score and was called out at the plate. Lagerye moved to third, but was left after two quick outs ended the game.

The first three innings of the Pitt game were scoreless until the visitors scored two in the fourth then led-off the fifth with a double and then drove in a run with a single. An additional four unearned runs then scored and the Owls were down 7-0. FAU scored one in the bottom of the fifth, but were held scoreless in the next two frames for the game’s 7-1 final.
