FAU softball used a doubleheader sweep of UTSA to propel themselves into first place in Conference USA. The Owls won game one 3-1 and game two 10-8 in eight innings.

Thirteen was a number of particular statistical note for the day.

Tatum Buckley got it done at the plate (2-for-2, walk, RBI) and in the circle during game one, where she threw a complete game two-hitter with seven strikeouts for her 13th win of the season and also retired the final 13 Roadrunner batters of the game.

Buckley threw 1.1 innings in relief to pick up her second win of the day while Mia Olson became the 13th player in program history to homer twice in the same game. She also singled and scored a third run.

Emily Lochten doubled, homered and scored four times for the Owls in their second win, giving her two home runs for the doubleheader.

“We struggled through the middle part of the conference schedule, but we’ve hit our stride the last couple of weeks”, said Head Coach Joan Joyce.

The Owls can clinch the C-USA regular season title with a win in Sunday’s series finale. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.

The softball team clinched the Conference USA regular season title despite a 4-3 loss to UTSA on Sunday. The title is the second in three years for the Owls. FAU concludes the regular season with a 28-24 overall record and a 15-8 conference record.

Emily Lochten led the game off with a solo shot to left field to give FAU a 1-0 lead. UTSA loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, tying the score on a wild pitch.

The score remained the same until the top of the fifth, when Samantha Lageyre’s sacrifice fly drove in Alex Miller to regain the lead for the Owls.

Jolie Duffner’s RBI double plated Sami Williams and increased FAU’s margin to 3-1. A walk and a fielding error put two UTSA runners on in the bottom of the seventh when Bailee Baldwin hit a homerun to center to give the Roadrunners a walkoff win.

As the tournament’s No. 1 seed, the Owls do not play until 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 10 against either Marshall, WKU or Louisiana Tech.

Florida Atlantic University Head Softball Coach Joan Joyce was named Conference USA Coach of the Year on Tuesday. The announcement was made in advance of the Conference USA Tournament, which begins on Wednesday. It is the eighth time in her career and second time in three years that Joyce has garnered conference Coach of the Year honors.

In addition, three FAU players made the All-Conference Team. Senior shortstop Emily Lochten was named to the First Team for the third consecutive year. Lochten has started all 52 games for the Owls at shortstop, hitting .350 with 31 RBI, including a .435 average in C-USA play. She leads the team with 52 runs scored, a school record 23 doubles and 11 home runs. Her .700 slugging percentage and .485 on-base percentage also tops the Owls. Earlier this season, Lochten, a 2017 NFCA All-American, became the first player in program history to steal 100 career bases and is FAU’s all-time leader with 125 career stolen bases.

Junior outfielder Madisyn Palmer also made the All C-USA First Team. Palmer leads the Owls in batting average (.399) and her 48 stolen bases is the most in C-USA. She also had a team high 15-game hitting streak earlier this season. Palmer has driven in 21 runs on the year and is just the second player in school history to steal 100 bases in her career, joining Lochten.

Tatum Buckley was named C-USA Second Team as a pitcher. The senior from Monroe, Conn., recorded a 15-10 record with five shutouts and was second in the conference with a 2.05 ERA. Against C-USA competition, she was even better, going 8-4 and leading the league with a 1.91 ERA. Buckley also got it done at the plate with a team high 31 RBI.

The Owls, winners of the regular season title, are the No.1 seed for the Conference USA Tournament and will play their first game at 2 p.m. on Thursday against either Marshall, WKU or Louisiana Tech.

Down four runs heading into the bottom of the sixth, Florida Atlantic grabbed the helmets determined to prove why the Owls were deemed the No. 1 seed in the 2018 Conference USA Softball Championship. The squad erupted for seven runs to stun No. 4 Louisiana Tech 7-4 in the first quarterfinal matchup Thursday afternoon.

The C-USA Regular-Season Champion punched its ticket to the 12 p.m. ET Friday semifinal, and awaits the winner of No. 2 UAB and No. 6 Middle Tennessee, to be determined in the nightcap of the quarterfinal doubleheader. Louisiana Tech will face the loser of that game at 2:30 p.m. ET Friday with a chance to keep its postseason alive.

Having tallied just three hits in the first five frames, the Owl offense opened fire with three-consecutive hits to start their sixth. Madisyn Palmersingled and the squad jumped on the board with back-to-back doubles from Samantha Lageyre and Tatum Buckley to split the deficit.

Louisiana Tech starter Preslee Gallaway was relieved, but Florida Atlantic bats were too hot as they adjusted to Jen Chapman to plate two on a single and tie the ballgame. With the bases loaded and the lineup turned over, Palmer turned on a pitch from Krystal de la Cruz that cleared the bases. The triple would make it a 7-4 lead for the Owls, without an answer from the Lady Techters in the seventh.

Palmer went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI. Lageyre was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run and RBI. Buckley notched her 16th win of the season, tossing all seven innings and allowing four runs on five hits and four punch outs.

Louisiana Tech was first to strike in the fourth inning as freshman designated player Sloane Stewartson unloaded for a two-run home run that landed beyond the left-field wall. Kimmie Atienza blasted one of her own in the fifth inning to cap the Lady Techster's scoring action. Chapman received the loss and moved to 2-1 on the year.
