Owls Split Saturday's Miken Classic Action; Potter No-Hits Towson

The Florida Atlantic University (13-11) softball team split its two games on Saturday night.

FAU lost to Stony Brook 3-2 in its first game of the day.  The Owls trailed 3-0 in the fourth inning, but scored twice when Blair Bodenmiller singled to center and Kerri Croney was hit by a pitch. FAU still had the bases loaded and one out, but could not manage another run in the inning.

Carrie Ann Potter threw an eight-inning no-hitter in FAU’s 3-0 victory over Towson in game two .  The game was a pitcher's duel between Potter and Tiger pitcher Shannon Johnston. Bodenmiller had the game’s first hit in the top of the fifth inning and after seven, the game was still a scoreless tie.

The Owls struck in the top of the eighth, when an Amber Barton single and Towson fielding error allowed both Christine Houghtaling and Hailey Broyles to score. Brittany Walker singled in Barton for the third run of the inning.  Potter walked a batter put did not allow a hit in the bottom half of the eighth to complete the no-hitter.

Potter joins Nikki Myers and Candice Freel as the only pitchers to throw multiple no-hitters in the same season. It was the 21st no-hitter in school history and first since 2004 to be longer than five innings.

FAU returns to action on Sunday at the Miken Classic when they play Harvard at 1 p.m.
