Softball: Owls Grounded by Iowa 3-1
Iowa got on top of the Owls early, scoring three runs in the first two innings and FAU was unable to catch up. The Hawkeyes went ahead in the first inning on a two-run double by Liz Watkins. They added another run in the second when Sam Valentine scored on a wild pitch. FAU starter Amber Barton was able to shut down Iowa for the rest of the night, retiring 17 straight batters to end the game.
The Owls loaded the bases in the fourth inning, but were unable to capitalize on the threat. Joshlyn Martinez put FAU on the scoreboard when she led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo shot to right. It was Martinez’s first career homerun and cut the deficit to 3-1. Martinez hit a one-out single in the seventh, but Iowa turned a double play to end the game.
FAU returns to the field on Thursday when they host Iowa in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
