Softball Signs Five to Letters of Intent

Florida Atlantic University head softball coach Joan Joyce has signed five players to national letters of intent.

“This class will a in a bunch of holes that we will have when after our seniors graduate,” said Joyce.

Kimberly Diaz (Montclair, CA) pitches and plays first base for Montclair High School, but her primary position for the Owls is expected to be in the outfield.

“Kim is a left hander and that was a focus of ours with this recruiting class,” said Coach Joyce.

Rebecca Garner is an infielder from Madison, FL and attends the same high school as recently graduated outfielder Becky Brandies.

On Garner, coach Joyce said, “She will provide us with even more speed.”

Whitley Herb plays outfield at Apopka High School and will continue in that position once she arrives at FAU. She was an all-Metro Conference selection as a junior.

“All Whitley does is get on base,” says coach Joyce, “She can bunt and slap, but she is still very disciplined at the plate.”

Carly Speering in currently playing third base at Indian River Community College, but is expected to compete for the starting spot at shortstop after the graduation of Blair Bodenmiller.

“Carly swings a very fast bat and will be dangerous at the plate,” said Joyce.

Rounding out the class is Jordan Stovall, an all-region catcher at Mauldin (SC) High School.

“Jordan is a big strong kid, and we expect her to see some playing time as a freshman,” said Joyce.

“This is one of the best hitting classes that we’ve ever brought in, especially from the left side of the plate.”
