2010-11 FAU Player of the Week Awards

Florida Atlantic University’s Athletic Department has started a Player of the Week Award to recognize outstanding athletic contributions by student-athletes on their sports teams throughout the 2010-11 athletic season.

Senior volleyball player Joanne Marras Tate is the first athlete to earn the Player of the Week Award after being named the most valuable player in last weekend’s Florida Gulf Coast University Invitational.  She helped the Owls to a 3-0 record and tournament title.

Tate, a setter, had a total of 116 assists in the three matches.  Her best match during the weekend came as she had 45 assists and a career-high 17 digs in a four-set victory over the host Eagles.

FAU’s volleyball team is off to its first 3-0 start since 2005, when it advanced to the NCAA tournament as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.  The Owls will return to action on Tuesday, August 31 against the University of Miami in Coral Gables, starting at 6 p.m.  The team will remain on the road when it travels for four matches at the Stetson University Invitational in DeLand, over the weekend.  FAU will open the home schedule on September 21 against Florida Gulf Coast.

The Florida Atlantic University Athletic Department has presented its Student-Athlete of the Week Award to senior football player Lester Jean and redshirt senior volleyball player Anne Vaughan after both student-athletes helped their teams to important victories last week.

Jean played a key role in the Owls’ season-opening 32-31 victory over UAB last Thursday in Birmingham , Ala.  The wide receiver had a personal-best night with nine receptions for 164 yards.  Two of his catches went for touchdowns and his 77-yard touchdown reception was a momentum-changing play, keeping FAU in the game against the Blazers.  The 164 receiving yards were the second most in school history for a game.

A volleyball player has received the FAU female award for the second straight week.  Vaughan earned all-tournament honors in last weekend’s Clarion Invitational at Stetson University as the Owls had a 3-1 record.  She averaged nearly three kills per match and hit .351.  The senior posted a career-best 19 kills, three blocks and two block assists in a 3-1 victory over Stetson last Friday.  She averaged nearly three kills in each match in the tournament and had a .351 hitting percentage.  The volleyball team, off to a 6-2 record this season, also defeated Wofford and Bethune Cookman in the tournament.

Men’s soccer player Lukas Simons scored two goals to help the Owls compile a 1-0-1 record for the weekend, including a 2-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin on Sunday after battling to a 1-1 draw on Friday against Georgia State University.  The freshman from Miami scored the game-winning goal against the Badgers and tallied a second-half goal that forced a draw in Friday’s match.  That goal was the first of his collegiate career.  Simons’ two scores have resulted from three shots on goal for the season – a team-best .750 goal-per-shot percentage.  Also, both of his goals have come off the bench this fall.

Meanwhile, women’s soccer player Jesse Shugg paced the Owls’ offensive attack in its two games in the Hurricane Cup tournament at the University of Miami last weekend.  The Burlington, Ontario native scored her first career goal in Friday’s match against North Dakota State University.  She attempted a game-high seven shots in that match.  Shugg’s goal early in the second half gave FAU its first lead of the season.

Women’s soccer player Brittney Nash and men’s cross country runner Josh Wolfe have been recognized as Florida Atlantic University’s Student-Athlete of the Week honorees for their outstanding performances during the week of September 19.

Nash, a freshman forward from Desoto , Tex. , played an instrumental role in helping the Owls to their first victory of the 2010 season.  She scored the game-winning goal with just over four minutes remaining in FAU’s 2-1 victory over   Fordham University on Sunday at the FAU Soccer Stadium.  The goal was set up with crisp passes on a counter attack by teammates Anhnhi Tran and Marisa Russo.  From there, Nash was able to pull the Rams’ goalkeeper away from the net, and the freshman poked the game-winner into a wide open net.  For the season, Nash leads the team with three goals and six points.

This marks the second-straight week that the women’s soccer program has had a player honored.

Meanwhile, Wolfe led the FAU men’s cross country team with a 30th-place finish among 201 runners at the Mountain Dew Invitational hosted, last Saturday in Gainesville , by the University of Florida .  The sophomore’s time on the 8-kilometer course was 26:22.73 – more than four seconds better than the next finisher.  Wolfe’s performance marked the second time this season that he has been the Owls’ top finisher, having also led the way in the September 4 King of the Hill meet at the University of Miami

After diving into the pool with strong season-opening performance at the All Florida Invitational, swimmers Eszter Bucz and  Csaba Pek have been recognized as the Florida Atlantic University’s Student-Athlete of the Week.
