Big 12 expansion rumor article

I keep seeing us mentioned in conjunction with FIU, implying if you take one you have to take the other, and then recently the articles seem to lean on us over FIU. If these conferences move around pieces and only have one slot to offer, I wonder what we could do to become more attractive than FIU, especially since they have the Miami market.

Putting the "winning solves everything" argument aside for a second because that part is obvious...

I've noticed a "commitment to Athletics" (meaning facilities) come up a couple times. I know our stadium is superior to FIU's, having been to both. They're building some new practice fields while we're trying to build an Athletic Center, and I have to think we'd win out there. I know there's more to it than that, but I'm certainly glad we have the Athletic Center on the horizon if expansion decisions put emphasis on things like that.

well i think we have the better campus, along with staff. Yet FAU does need to do more to become more condusice to other conferences. Win on the field consistently as well as spend the money on upgrading and improving facilities. We also as a university have to spend money to improve the buildings and equipment on campus as well. And all that comes from having a successful sports program and an alumni base that is willing to donate to the university to do that.

This season will be crucial in showing the progress of our turnaround with regard to expansion. 8-4 and some Florida AAC schools leaving their conference puts us in a great position. Its time to put the "nice school, nice market, crap football team" to rest.

So Miss is reaching I think. Those decisions are based largely on market reach and Hattiesburg isnt much of a media market.

I agree, just the ability to come down here for recruiting opportunities makes FIU ahead of So. Miss.

Or Marshall or WKU or MTSU. Those have better football teams but not the media draw nor recruiting areas. Rice is in Houston but WAY out of AAC area. ODU and Charlotte could get some interest but like FIU, their football facilities WAY down there - WAY TOO SMALL!

I just pray that it is not FIU over us again, but I think out current leaders (Dr. Kelly and Mr. Chun) are MUCH stronger this time around!!!!

We caught a break last time to move up but lucky for us, we have passed FIU significantly in terms of leadership and facilities…slightly better in football and have a brighter future too.

This is a defining year for us. And Charlie!

Big 10 invited Maryland and Rutgers.  These are business decisions based on potential $$$ through marketshare and TV contracts.  No way is a school getting an invite because they had a good QB that led them to a 9-3 record the last few years.

If a school gets invited based on winning % the person doing so has absolutely no business sense.  Winning % in college football is not a sustainable thing...coach/QB leaves that directly contributes to on the field success then your stuck with that program.  If you have any sense at all you invite the schools with the most upside regarding population, facilities, etc.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

So.Miss. has FAU beat in Football history, basketball and very equal in Baseball. They are huge in that part of the country. Doesn't surprise me that they are ahead of us. We got off the ground, stubbed our toe and haven't done anything since. The success of the football program is what will be the determining factor and we are not impressive in that department.

S. Miss. issue is Hattiesburg, population 47,000. NOT a decent media market, that and a smallish 14.5K enrollment.
