FAU Women’s Tennis Rallies to Defeat Michigan State

Winning the final two singles matches, the Florida Atlantic University women’s tennis team rallied to score an important 4-2 victory over Michigan State University of the Big Ten Conference early Saturday afternoon in Orlando, Fla.  The victory was the second straight match triumph and improved the Owls’ record 2-2 on the season.

FAU started slowly dropping two of the three doubles matches – earning Michigan State the single doubles match point.  However, the team quickly seized momentum with straight-set victories in four of the five singles matches, breaking a 2-2 dual match tie.

“After losing the doubles point I was extremely proud of the girls’ effort to battle back and pick up a big victory,” said Women’s Tennis Head Coach Marcy Hora-Cava.

Pushing the Owls over the top were back-to-back victories by sophomores Erika Mrazkova and Justine Humair.  Mrazkova edged out a hard fought 6-4, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 singles position, while Humair had an impressive 6-3 and 6-4 victory over the Spartans’ No. 1 singles player.

FAU other two points came from junior Virginia Augustin, who had a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles to improve her record to 4-1 on the season; and freshman Natasha Basma, who recorded her first career singles victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles.

“It was nice to see Natasha Basma get her first collegiate victory and feel good about the match she played,” said Hora-Cava.

Sophomore Cassie Bergeson participated in two matches – at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles (with classmate Humair) – that weren’t completed because the Owls had assured themselves of the match victory.

The Owls will conclude the busy afternoon with a match against University of Central Florida.
