Men's Golf: Ben Silverman Named SBC Male Golfer of the Month for October

After finishing second in Florida Atlantic University’s three fall tournaments, senior Ben Silverman finally finished atop the pack and earned the Sun Belt Conference Male Golfer of the Month Award for October.  The honor was announced recently by the conference office.

Silverman improved his score in all three events and averaged a below-par 71.1 score for the month.  He had a career-best 65 round to help the Owls capture the Bethune-Cookman Tournament title and had a five-under-par 211 composite score over three rounds to tie for second place in this week’s Stetson University Invitational.

The Thornhill, Ontario native credits his summer preparation for the outstanding fall campaign.

“I have been working really hard on my balance throughout my entire swing,” said Silverman.  “There was a time last spring that coach (Angelo Sands) said it didn’t look like I was not having fun on the course.  I was putting pressure on myself.  So, I just went back to the basics and that philosophy has paid off with good results.”

Sands has seen a transformation in Silverman’s approach to the game during the fall season.

“Ben has spent a lot of time working on the little things such as chipping and putting to become the type of golfer he has become,” said Sands.  “I am proud to see him get recognition for his hard work on the course.”

Regarding the spring season, which begins on March 5 at the University of South Florida Tournament in Tampa , Silverman stated: “I still want to win a tournament.  That is one of my goals for the spring season.”

Silverman becomes the first Owl to receive the Sun Belt Conference’s Golfer of the Week Award since teammate and junior Kelly McHugh accomplished the feat in March of the 2008-09 season.
