Men's Golf: Kelly McHugh Qualifies for USGA Public Links Championship
FAU's men’s golf program will be represented in one of America ’s most prestigious amateur tournaments as Kelly McHugh has qualified for the United States Golf Association’s Public Links Championship after posting two strong rounds in a qualifying tournament at the Don Shula Golf Club in Miami on June 17-18.
“The hardest part of the process is now over by qualifying,” said McHugh. “I am looking forward to playing in the prestigious tournament.”
McHugh birdied six of the last seven holes to finish the second round with an impressive 66-stroke score. That score combined with a 71 over the first round to compile a 137 total score.
“I have never gone through a stretch of holes like that before,” noted McHugh. “I told myself after being outside the qualifying number at hole No. 11 to just think about the process of shooting a good score, instead of worrying about the final result.”
The Public Links Championship will take place July 12-17 at the Bryan Park Golf & Conference Center , a 7,116-yard, par-71 course in Greensboro, N.C. He will tune up for the championship by competing in the Florida Amateur Tournament on June 24-27 at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Country Club in Orlando.
“I am really happy that Kelly will experience the thrill of playing in a USGA event,” said Angelo Sands, FAU men’s golf head coach. “When you arrive at the tournament you receive your USGA player’s badge. That badge is something you will cherish for your entire life.”
At FAU, McHugh recorded a 74.5 scoring average over 23 rounds during his junior season. He tallied a season-best 67-stroke score to place seventh in the Stetson Tournament last fall.
