Men's Track

Just wondering. Is there any discussion regarding a Men's Track team at FAU? It would also help with Football recruiting.

Re: Men's Track

I believe it has to do with title 9.  We should have one though.

The problem is Title IX, which specifies a ratio between the number of male and female athletes. It won't happen unless another women's sport is also added.

Re: Men's Track

How about adding Women's Ice Hockey? FAU would have the only team south of, say, Ohio State. And the rivalry with Bemidji State (Minnesota) could become a natural…. (Yes, I'm joking, apropos of any Title IX discussion.)

Re: Men's Track

Doesn't title IX have to do with the number of scholarships offered. They could start a team with no or limited number of scholarships like the men's hockey team which competes, I believe, in Div III.

Yes, it has to do with scholarships. AFAIK, the men's hockey team has nothing to do with our athletic department. It's a club team and operates under student government.

Re: Men's Track

the ice hockey team has nothing to do with our athletic department. They are a club sport funded by SG and managed by Campus Recreation. However, their "schedule" does consist of a lot, if not all, Div III schools.

Title IX has to do wtih scholarships and quantity of men/women athletes.

I had this discussion with some athletic department people in January of 2003 when I was trying to persuade the university to allow dancers and cheerleaders to be treated like athletes and get priority registration when they were registering for classes.

The problem is football. No women's sport has a roster size of over 100 and 80+ scholarships. So, in FAU's case, it has to have other women's sports to equal the roster size of football and the men's sports. Women's track and women's volleyball are two sports that at FAU the men don't have.

Know what I mean?

What about a girls rugby team or something along that sort?  They are all over other universities.
