It is great to hear people want to get involved and make a difference.  We need more of that!  My advice is (and trust me, I am no expert) to make sure you are careful to understand what is within the rules.  If you are going to become involved, things change.  The best of intentions can lead to minor infractions.

There is a gentleman at FAU named Ed Hayward who is in charge of compliance.  He is awesome.

If you are just dealing with students and alumni, etc, you should be good, but if anything deals with Student-Athletes, you have to be careful.  Just make sure–if you have some great ideas that Ed is onboard.  I run ideas by him and he will say yes or no and I accept whichever he says.

I will give an example of something that happened at Indiana back in the day that seems so innocent (and was) yet caused a problem.  Steve Alford who won a National Championship at Indiana (Basketball) and who may be one of the all time squeaky clean athletes in the history of athletics was suspended for one of the biggest games for Indiana, against Kentucky.  The infraction: he was asked by a Sorority at Indiana to pose for a charity calendar.  He did and it was deemed an infraction and he was suspended.  No one had any ill intentions.  It was for charity.  It was against the rules.

Just ask if you are not sure when it comes to student athletes.

Other than that…go for it and have a great time!!!
