Track and Field Junior Friederike Feil has qualified for the NCAA East Regional for the third straight year after a successful day at the Penn Relays on Thursday.

Feil qualified in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 10:33.82, which is also a new school record and is the best time in that event this year by a Sun Belt athlete. Feil qualified for the NCAA Regional in that event the past two seasons. She joins team mate Toyria Mattear in the NCAA East Regional.

Mattear finished 14th in the 400 meter hurdles at the meet on Thursday, in 1:01.53, despite 45 degree temperatures at race time.

Action continues at the Penn Relays on Friday. Live results and video are available at www.thepennrelays.com .

The 2009 NCAA East Regional for track will be held in Greensboro, NC on May 28-30.

Friederike Feil (2:13), Toni Jackson (2:13), Patricia Gumbs (2:13) and Charlene Luxama (2:16) combined to set the school record in the 4x800 meter relay at the final day of the Penn Relays on Saturday.

It is the third school record of the weekend and second relay record of the meet for FAU. The Owls finished 6th in the event ahead of teams from Penn State, Seton Hall and host Penn.

“It was a really great weekend for the entire team, we ran well and having a regional qualifier and three school records was icing on the cake,” said Alex Smolka head track and field coach.

The team will take a break from competition before heading to Murfreesboro, TN for Sun Belt Championships. The 2009 Sun Belt Outdoor Track and Field championships will be held on May 8-10.
