Women's Soccer Stuns UALR 6-0

After a disappointing 0-6 mark to start the 2010 season, FAU women’s soccer has suddenly caught fire winning their third straight match today with a 6-0 blanking of conference opponent University of Arkansas at Little Rock (4-6-0, 0-1-0).

Florida Atlantic (2-6-0, 1-0-0) was impressive in their conversion of shots on goal tallying eight, and connecting on six of them.

“Today was a great performance, we’ve been waiting for something like this to happen”, said Head coach Brian Dooley. “If we can get that on a steady basis, we might be able to scare a few people.”

The Owls quickly took control of the match with goals by Allison Griffin, and Jesse Shugg at the 1:26 ad 2:43 marks of the first period, respectively.

Griffin, a transfer from South Florida, scored her first two goals as on Owl on the afternoon and also contributed two assists.

“The great intensity that we came out with in the game, is what got us off to a good start”, said Griffin. “Everybody came together; it was a complete team effort.”

But she wasn’t alone, as Boca Raton native Alex Major also enjoyed her first goals as an Owl in the first period.  Major was also quick to praise her teammates for their involvement.

“We know how to play with each other now; and we are working as a team”, Major replied when asked about her performance. “We’re not trying to do stuff on our own, and know the best way to win is to set everyone up.”

Maria Russo accounted for the final FAU goal, scoring off a cross in the center of the box at the 45:57 mark of the match.

FAU will next hit the road for a two game road swing against South Alabama and Troy on Oct. 1st, and 3rd.

“I think we’ve got such a dynamic group developing between Shugg, Major, Nash, and Griffin”, Dooley said. “We have an opportunity to get a couple results on the road, and that means so much more in the conference play.”
