Women's Soccer: Toppers Knock Off Owls 4-2 in SBC Opener

Gabriela DeVries Scores Second Goal of Season in Loss

Western Kentucky University scored twice in the first 14 minutes of Friday’s Sun Belt Conference match to pick up a 4-2 victory over the Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team in the league opener for both schools.

Gabriela DeVries scored her second goal of the season to put the Owls on the scoreboard 10 minutes into the second half.  The goal came on a cross from Brianna Kelts that cut the deficit to 3-1.

Freshman Jennifer Sinner scored an unassisted goal to cap the offensive attack for FAU with a shot from the right side 15 yards out.  It marked her first career goal.

Senior forward Ashley Mannarino led the team with three shots while DeVries added two shots.  The Hilltoppers outshot the Owls in the match by a 22-9 margin.

Kelsey Meyer paced Western Kentucky’s attack with two goals while teammate Kellie Walker added two assists and a goal.

WKU’s Mallory Outerbridge got the scoring started seven minutes into the match after drawing the Owls’ goalkeeper from the goal.  Meyer would score the next two Hilltopper goals to give the team a 3-0 advantage.

FAU stands 2-6-2 on the season and will resume Sun Belt Conference action on Sunday, Sept. 27 at Middle Tennessee State University at 1 p.m. (ET).  Western Kentucky improves to 6-2-1 in the fall campaign with the win.
