New Innovation Village update...

they put an ad up recently to build student apartments on the Northeast corner of the campus, between us and PBCC. it's on the website under new facilities planning (something like that). it calls for construction to start this June and be open for August 09'. 600 beds, 4 bedrooms to an apartment with a living area and kitchen.

They also mention a pool and BBQ area.

If the University can put 1200 more people on campus in two years, 600 this year and 600 in 09' that would be pretty great.

Wow, you beat me to it.

Here is the link if anyone wants to see it:

ERROR: A link was posted here (url) but it appears to be a broken link.

http://wise.fau.edu/facilities/uavp/programs-folder/600_Bed_Innov_Village_Program_for_Signiture_11.20.07.pdf

Some highlights:

"Currently, the total number of units of housing on campus (beds) is approximately 2450 beds. Today, there is a renewed emphasis to create a more traditional college life on the FAU Boca Raton campus. To this end, FAU will build student housing units reflecting the needs of its more mature students."

"FACILITY DEFICIENCIES: Affordable off-campus housing for upperclassmen and graduate students has become very difficult to find near the campus. Providing such housing on campus will enhance student life and help transform FAU from a commuter college into a more traditional college."

"Each unit shall provide for a private single bedroom for each student, arranged in four bedroom suites with a living room, dining area and kitchen, and at least two separate bathrooms."

"The Architectural Design of the Innovation Village Apartments shall be respectful of the existing
campus fabric and texture, while breaking new ground in the virgin wilderness north of Lee Street.
On this greenfield site, the University is seeking a new urban vernacular that enhances student life
and provides informal interaction and recreational opportunities as well as retail establishments
that may reduce the need to leave campus. This project seeks to create a sense of place built
around plazas and pocket parks, while relating to other components of Innovation Village such as
the Stadium, the Arena, and another 1,800 residential units in the future. All of these components,
as well as the FAU Recreation Center and the FAU Alumni Center will converge on a main street
pedestrian retail center at the north end of the Breezeway extension."

Page 14 shows where it's going to go – you know where the parents park to attend the Henderson soccer games? It's there. It's at the south entrance of PBCC.

Also, since this project won't be ready until 2009, they likely won't approve another set of apartments (a Phase II) until 2009 when they know they've filled these.

I told Tripp and Donaudy that you can get plenty of students to live here if you make attractive housing. If you build more shoddy shoeboxes, you're going to get people looking elsewhere. They should build as long as the demand outnumbers the availability. If you have 300-500 people on the waiting list (and there are probably even more who didn't put themselves on the waiting list) then build another dorm. Best way to stop being a "commuter school?" Be a resident-heavy school.

2450 + 600 = 3050 people on campus in 2009.
Another 1800 = 4850 by some date (600 every two years is not unlikely, so 2015)

Too bad they couldn't have this done for August 2008. But at least they're doing it for 2009.

Also, looks like they're finally going to be demolishing Algonquin in 2010…

Re: New Innovation Village update...

Don't know if it has been said already but..

Anyone ever been up to FAU Jupiter? They have an "Innovation Village" type deal on and around their campus. It has nothing to do with FAU (meaning FAU didn't build it) But…they have a two-story retail shopping area with expensive dining and expensive clothing and of course Roger Dean Stadium.

Speaking of Roger Dean Stadium - I remember talks three years ago that could have brought the Cincinnati Reds and/or Cleveland Indians to campus for their spring training. It would have been a multi-field baseball complex.

FAU Port St Lucie = New York Mets training
FAU Jupiter = Marlins and St Louis Cardinals training
FAU Ft Lauderdale/Commercial/Lockhart campus/stadium - Baltimore Orioles.

No wonder why we are a "baseball" school, or at least have been…

I could be wrong but I think the University quietly abandoned the Commercial campus this year.

Algonquin has lasted longer than roaches, the sun and it was there 2000 years before the first person ever came to So. Fla. You cant tear down the ALG. The best year of my life was there! Im dead serious!

Isn't that the year the step competition got out of hand and you ended up with a butt of a gun across your head. Some fun year at the ALG

Yes! I belive it was called the "Florida Classic"I that got a bit out of hand with the helicopters flying over and all the swat teams running around. It was a tear gas gun and the cop called me eminem.

That is one of the great memories back in 2001.
