Re: Stadium Deal Dead

I wish people would actually stand up for their decisions and not just back down every time someone gets offended.  FAU and MJS took the money to begin with, that decision was done.  The fact that we returned the gift after a little opposition just makes the leadership look weak.  I still stand by my thought that all this bad press would blow over and we would have gone back to obscurity in short order.  All they had to do was wait it out, there was never really any reason for the school to even acknowledge the criticisms.  In 3 months no one outside of students and alumni will remember any of this.

You do realize it was GeoGroup that withdrew the money not the university right? Anyway, heard on the radio that FAU and Sunshine Sports and Entertainment are working on finding a new sponsor for the stadium. Thank god Pat Chun got the media deal with SSE done earlier this year.

You forgot your red font….I would bet that a Hooters naming deal would receive a much greater public out cry than the GEO Group…maybe like 45 people.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you listened to the radiocast with MJ & 106.3, right?

If so, then that very same broadcast said that it was mutual between the two parties, GEO Group & FAU, to take the deal away. It passed our BOT so we had to take it away.

Where did you hear it was solely the desire of GEO Group to take it away?

Re: Stadium Deal Dead

Well I don't know who did what but after the deal ws signed, I would think that FAU could have, if it chose to, sued the GeoGroup for breach of contract if the GeoGroup at this point wanted out of the deal but FAU refused to allow them out. Both sides must have reconsidered the bad negative publicity and lashback and felt it best to MUTUALLY cancel the deal.

Re: Stadium Deal Dead

That was a great interview - he held her feet to the fire well and tried to get answers to what everybody's been asking/thinking. Thanks for the heads-up!

In the end he asks if we're going to hire a third company to thoroughly vet the next company that offers a donation to make sure there are no skeletons in the closet and she said that's an "excellent suggestion" and it's "a conversation worth having."

Seriously? Look, Saunders… it's the only conversation you should be having prior to accepting donations from now on.

I sorta agree, but then again EVERY company (just like people) has skeletons or history or whatever - if Bank of America comes here with $100 million they will still draw protestors over the mortgage issue or whatever! Not like we took the money from the KKK or something. GeoGroup serves a very important role in today's society in which governmenta are trying to "privative" many functions. They are basically clean and a publically traded compny who saw they share value increase quite a bit sionce the FAU deal was announced actually!

Re: Stadium Deal Dead

Here is a summary of the interview from ESPN760.

FAU President Mary Jane Saunders joined Evan Cohen (M-F 4-6 PM) on ESPN 106.3 FM and 760-AM Tuesday, following the announcement that the GEO Group was withdrawing its six-million dollar donation to the school. According to Saunders, FAU has signed a contract with Sunrise Sports and Entertainment, the parent company of the BB&T Center, with the hopes of securing a new sponsor for the football stadium, replacing the GEO Group.

“We actually have an agreement with them [Sunrise Sports and Entertainment] to look for a naming partner for the stadium, for the basketball arena, for our sporting events, as well as have a closer relationship with the Panthers,” Saunders said. “In fact this Saturday night is FAU day at the Panthers [game].”

Lets be clear here….the taxpayers of Broward county are the parent company of the BB&T Center…Sunrise Sports and Entertainment may be the management company of the center, but they do not OWN the arena.  The taxpayers are getting hosed on that deal, which is always the case.
