Stadium Naming Rights Protest Scheduled for 10:00 AM on Free Speech Lawn

El said

I, for one, will not be renewing my season tickets, which I’ve had since the beginning of the program (I am as loyal a fan as any of you).

This naming controversy is more than mere big time college sports business.  It’s really a question of moral integrity.  I’m not sure that I can sit and watch a football game in a stadium named after a company that’s in a business that has profound negative effects on the American judicial system and human rights.

To those unwilling (or unable) to understand, consider this:  What are ramifications for the judicial system when imprisonment becomes a commodity and the prison industry begins to influence legislators to draft law for profit?  “Land of the Free” becomes really ironic, doesn’t it?

Lots of people here are joking about as if it’s a non-issue (“Don’t do the crime,” and other such stupidity.), and such comments are extraordinarily ignorant.  The flippancy on this board is revolting.  As Thoreau said, “After the first blush of sin comes indifference,” so I guess if you’ve already sold your soul for NCAA football, then “Owlcatraz” isn’t too bad.

FAU is now a worldwide joke. See today’s article in The Guardian.

Have fun at the tailgate.  You’ll need to drink a few extra beers to forget about your complicity in this travesty.  See you in twelve years.

Hey, since you've had your tickets from the beginning you must have some pretty good seats, sounds like there is an opening I'll have to call the ticket office and upgrade mine. I'll drink to that!!!

I guess my questions here are…

Do you think prisons/jails/detention centers were nice places before privitization?

Is the Geo Group sued/held accountable for an injustice against an inmate?

Have you contacted you state representatives regarding the standards in the facilities built/ran by the Geo Group or any other company in the same line of business?

What are the positives/negatives of having a private for profit company running these facilities as opposed to the government running them?

Do you feel that laws that stem from government initiantives like the War on Drugs would be rescinded if private prison companies had no involvment?

What legislation/laws are they lobbying to keep in place to put/keep people behind bars?  Last I researched this, marijuana crimes were the reason for about 38% of the people currently serving time.

With the position you and others are taking on this matter, maybe these are some of the issues that should be discussed to bring your opinions to validity and light.

Teambeer is the most knowledgeable FAU sports fan I know, way smarter than me.

I guess my questions here are…

Do you think prisons/jails/detention centers were nice places before privitization? No, they shouldn't be.

Is the Geo Group sued/held accountable for an injustice against an inmate?  They have been sued several times.  Give more detail about accountability?  The short answer is, kind of.

Have you contacted you state representatives regarding the standards in the facilities built/ran by the Geo Group or any other company in the same line of business?  Less concerned about standards than how they get their customers.

What are the positives/negatives of having a private for profit company running these facilities as opposed to the government running them?  Positives, lower cost to govt. negatives, more "laws" are created for trivial "crimes" to imprison more people.  Private prisons lobby to make it easier to lock people up.  The United States has the highest number of citizens per capita and in totality behind bars compared to the rest of the developed world.

Do you feel that laws that stem from government initiantives like the War on Drugs would be rescinded if private prison companies had no involvment? No, but the WOD is a joke and needs to be ended.  Has drug use or violent crime really gone down?  Just take a look at the death toll on our southern border and the number of border patrol agents being murdered by the mexican cartels.

What legislation/laws are they lobbying to keep in place to put/keep people behind bars?  Last I researched this, marijuana crimes were the reason for about 38% of the people currently serving time.  Drugs should be legal IMO.  Tax the shit out of them and pay off the deficit or something else.  Being locked up for marijuana is a joke.  you should know the ridiculousness of these laws with how draconian Texas' laws are.

With the position you and others are taking on this matter, maybe these are some of the issues that should be discussed to bring your opinions to validity and light.

I know this wasn't aimed at me, but here are my thoughts for discussion, above in purple

I love reading Dusky's responses when people say dumb things. It's great

My two favorite teams are FAU, and who ever is beating FIU!

Wow, slow news day over in old England I see. Does she go all over the place in this "article" (really more of a personal editorial by non-editorial staff) or not. Some of the comparisions - WOW! At least she does mention some other 'questionable" business partnerships over there as well. As on e of the posters of her story note - was not the Houston Astros ballpark once called ENRON FIELD! You can nitpick any and all companies, including the wonderful Guardian!

I think what will get interesting is now MJ is backpedalling a little bit saying that she was not aware of GEO's transgressions prior to the public outcry.  Like some others have mentioned, she is quite underwhelming.  I'm sorry, but how does this get by everyone in the university associated with this?  A little due diligence needed or were they just not prepared for the backlash?

In other news GEO group reported great earnings for the quarter the other day, stock was up nicely.
I think the people who have an issue with GEo need to get over it, they are not drug traffickers or murderers or something….oh wait, what's that, they actually take those people off the street so I don't have to deal with them….heck that's a good thing isn't it!

who cares. it's 6 million. end of story. Im laughing at the idea of one of these people who are currently complaining would actually turn down this groups 6 million dollar donation if it was a private gift to them. get real

I was thinking about this. technically there is only morning classes tomorrow before the start of spring break. How many students even with the flyers up around campus are actually going to show up tomorrow to ask questions? Spring break this place empties out faster than Marlins and Nationals game.
