2011-12 FAU Women's Basketball Schedule

The Lady Owls got back into the win column on Wednesday night with a 63-52 win over North Florida. The victory snaps a four game slide.

After falling behind 9-0 at the start, Florida Atlantic (4-5) employed a 15-3 run to take the lead midway through the first half before heading into locker room up 28-27 at the break.

They would surrender the lead just once more early in the second frame before rattling off two successful runs to put the contest out of hand.

The Owls connected on a season-high nine three-pointers, and were led by Kimberly Smith's season-high 16 points.

“There were times in the game that we may have played our best basketball of the season,” said Head Coach Chancellor Dugan.

The Ospreys (2-7) threatened late in the second period, pulling to within six points, but Florida Atlantic closed strong at the free throw line by making eight in a row.

The team wraps up a three game home stand against Bethune Cookman on Tuesday in a mid afternoon affair beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Earlier in the year, Florida Atlantic defeated Bethune 68-46 at FAU Arena. A repeat performance would take three overtime periods, but saw the Owls come away with a 71-70 victory at the Stetson Hatter Classic, despite BC (1-8) shooting a robust 71.4% from the floor collectively for the extra frames.

"We definitely went the extra mile to earn an important victory," commented head coach Chancellor Dugan. "We put forth our best defensive effort of the season today."

The game featured 15 lead changes, 11 ties and neither team could manage to get more than a three-point lead at any stage of the second half.

Chenise Miller had a career high night with 18 points to lead the way for FAU (5-5). She was joined in double figures by Latavia Dempsey (15), April Goins (12), and Kimberly Smith (11).

In a clutch performance, Dempsey notched 12 of her game tally in the third and final OT period, however none were as important as the two free throws she hit with just :15 remaining to secure the win.

"Latavia stepped up her play when we needed her the most to win the game," said Dugan.

FAU will close out their non-conference schedule tomorrow at 3:15 p.m. when they take on host Stetson University. The Hatters (10-3) defeated Campbell 70-55 in game one of the classic on Tuesday.

"The girls know they can play better and they want to show that tomorrow against Stetson", Dugan said.

Tired legs likely played a part in the Owls' lopsided 52-37 loss to Stetson University on Wednesday night in Deland, FL.

Florida Atlantic (5-6) trailed by just five points at the break, but shot just 27.1% from the floor, and 38.9% from the free throw line.

"We struggled to make shots in the first half and were fighting an uphill battle the entire game", said coach Chancellor Dugan.

Conversely, the host Hatters (11-3) produced a solid showing from behind the arc at 9-of-18 (50%).

Chenise Miller notched an 8 point 12 rebound performance for Florida Atlantic, who also struggled from the free throw line (7-of-18).

FAU will kick off the Sun Belt portion of their 2011-12 schedule on the road on December 29th against Arkansas State. Tip-off time is 6:35 p.m.

Florida Atlantic (6-6, 1-0) defeated Arkansas State (5-8, 0-1) tonight 57-44 in their Sun Belt conference opener.

The Red Wolves were just 1-of-16 from long range for the night, and surrendered a 39-23 advantage off the glass to the visiting Owls.

"We played with good poise and was able to control the rebounding edge in the first half," said FAU Coach Chancellor Dugan. "It was a total team effort, and that’s what it is going to take to achieve our No. 1 goal – winning the conference championship."

The Owls would trail by as many as nine points in the first half before enjoying a 26-20 lead at intermission.

Chenise Miller was FAU's leading offensive contributor with 12 points, and joined Teri Stamps, Takia Brooks, and Vontrice Dennis with a game high six grabs each.

The FAU women will ring in the New Year on a happy note after downing Louisiana-Lafayette 66-52 this afternoon at the Cajundome. The win marks the first time the Owls have began a Sun Belt schedule 2-0 since joining the league.

Clamping down defensively in the second half, FAU held the host team scoreless for just under eight minutes.

“We were able to take our defensive effort to another level today and that contributed in us pulling away for this great road conference win”, said head coach Chancellor Dugan.

Chenise Miller posted the Owls’ first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Terri Stamps (18), and April Goins (12), added double figure efforts.

Florida Atlantic enjoyed a 44-35 rebounding edge, and shot 54.5% from three point range.

FAU will next take on Louisiana-Monroe in Boca Raton next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

The Owls continued the march into new territory tonight, notching their third straight win with a 65-58 victory over Louisiana-Monroe at FAU Arena, and moving to a 3-0 mark in Sun Belt play in the process.

An April Goins' layup midway through the first period had the home team up 14-3 as ULM struggled to connect missing 11 of their first 12 attempts from the floor.

Although there were some ties along the way thereafter, Florida Atlantic (8-6, 3-0) never trailed and would lead the entire second frame.

"It was important that we protected our home court after two road wins last week,” said head coach Chancellor Dugan. "We got great contributions from several different pieces. That balance and unselfish play has been the key to our recent success."

FAU's Takia Brooks paced all scorers with 18 points, and Chenise Miller added a game high nine rebounds to go with 13 points. Goins was in double figures as well sinking 14 points on the night.

The Warhawks (4-12, 2-1) pulled to within three points at 55-58 with a little over two minutes to play in the game, but the Owls made 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Florida Atlantic saw a commanding 43-34 edge in rebounds, and shot 85% (17-of-20) at the charity stripe as well.

The team next faces Arkansas-Little Rock on Saturday at 5:30 PM.

April Goins netted 10 points for the Owls, and Chenise Miller added eight.
