FAU Women's basketball handles FIU on Sunday! Game release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

The Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team outscored rival FIU 45-27 in the second half to earn a 79-63 win in its Conference USA opener in Miami on Sunday.

The Owls (7-5, 1-0 C-USA) were led by Shaneese Bailey’s career-high 29 points, 18 of which came in the first half. The sophomore scored FAU’s first 16 points of the contest in the first 6:33, making each of her first seven field goal attempts.

Freshman Melinda Myers also set a new mark in her young career with 13 points, including eight down the stretch to help the Owls pull away for the win. Junior Ali Gorrell also reached double-digits with ten points and led FAU with seven assists and six rebounds. Freshman Lauren Williams tacked on 11 points and recorded four steals.

FIU (3-9, 0-1 C-USA) led by as many as six with 3:26 left in the first half, but FAU chipped away at the lead, tying the game before the Panthers made a layup with nine seconds left to take a 36-34 lead into the locker room.

Bailey and Myers combined to score the first six points of the second half to earn a one-point lead before sophomore Kat Wright buried back-to-back 3-pointers that put the Owls on top for the final time.

The defense in the second half setup the comeback for the Owls as they kept the Panthers from making a basket over the last 5:27 of the game. By that point, however, FAU had amassed an 11 point lead that would not be relinquished.

FAU returns home to host UAB and Middle Tennessee on Jan. 8 and 10, respectively.

FAU won their third straight contest on Thursday, defeating UAB (6-7, 0-2) 66-56 in Boca Raton.

Shaneese Bailey registered her second straight 29 point effort behind 11-of-21 shooting and hauled in 11 rebounds.

The Owls led 41-24 at the break but saw that margin reduced to seven points after a Blazer three point basket with 1:01 to play in the game.

That would be as close as the visitors would come though, as Florida Atlantic (8-5, 2-0) went 7-of-8 at the stripe to finish matters.

Kat Wright (3-6 3PT) and Ali Gorrell (57.0% FG) were also in double figures for FAU, with 13 points and 10 points respectively.

FAU will next host Middle Tennessee at 5:00 PM on Saturday.

Shaneese had 23 points at the half while the entire UAB squad had 24 at half.  This team is fun to watch.  Everyone should check them out at least once.  You will get hooked.

Fresh off the heels of back to back 29 point showing the two games prior, Shaneese Bailey notched a 27 point effort against Middle Tennessee on Saturday.

But it would not be enough this time, as the women's basketball team lost to Middle Tennessee 101-69 on Saturday.

The Blue Raiders (9-4, 3-0) cashed in on a 50-29 rebounding effort which led to a 27-8 advantage in second chance points, but more importantly held the Owls to just 5-of-21 (23.8%) shooting from long range.

FAU led 19-14 at the 12:04 mark of the first period, but managed only four points over the next nine minutes of action while allowing MTSU to embark on a 32 point barrage they would not overcome.

The Owls got no closer than 19 points from there on.

Freshman forward Sasha Cedeno posted 15 points behind a 7-of-11 showing from the floor and Kat Wright pitched in 10 points.

Florida Atlantic  (8-6, 2-1) will next take on 25th ranked Western Kentucky on Thursday in Bowling Green. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 PM.

The Owls lost to WKU today… Game release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

A 21-0 run to open the game gave Western Kentucky a cushion that the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team failed to overcome as the Owls lost 80-43 on the road.

The Owls (8-7, 2-2 C-USA) saw their Conference USA record slip to 2-2 and FAU will remain on the road to face conference foe Marshall on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Huntington, W. Va.

Sophomore Shaneese Bailey led the Owls with 14 points, with six of those coming from the free throw line. The Callahan, Fla. native was one rebound away from a double-double.

WKU (15-2, 4-0 C-USA) scored 21 unanswered points over the first 5:20 of the contest before Bailey made a pair of free throws to snap the streak.

It took 6:28 for the Owls to find the bottom of the net before Ali Gorrell hit a three-pointer to pull back within 18 points. A 12-5 run over the last five minutes of the half gave WKU a 48-20 lead at intermission. FAU committed 15 first-half turnovers, which the Hilltoppers converted into 20 points.

A 12-2 run early in the second half extended the WKU lead to 64-28 at the second media timeout. The Hilltoppers then pieced together an 11-0 run to reach the largest margin of the game, a 41-point lead at 77-36.

FAU made just three baskets in the last 8:33 as freshmen Raven Doyle, Melinda Myers and Danneal Ford each made layups down the stretch.

Ford finished the day with a career-high six points while fellow freshman Sasha Cedeno also posted six.

Women's basketball drops thier third straight on Saturday…game release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

First-half shooting struggles proved to be the demise of the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team as the Owls lost their third consecutive Conference USA game at Marshall 66-59 on Saturday.

Junior Ali Gorrell recorded her third double-double of the season, leading the Owls (8-8, 2-3 C-USA) with 19 points and ten rebounds. Sophomore Shaneese Bailey had 16 points, ten of which came from the free throw line.

Gorrell scored eight of FAU’s first ten points to give the Owls a 10-6 advantage early. Marshall then went on a 10-0 run to take a six point lead midway through the first half. Two Gorrell free throws would cut the lead to five points minutes later, but the Herd (11-5, 3-2 C-USA) finished the half on a 9-2 run to hold a 29-17 lead at halftime.

FAU’s 17 points is the fewest in a half since it hit the same mark against Arkansas-Little Rock on Feb. 23, 2013.

The Owls went on a 17-5 run early in the second half, culminating in a layup by Bailey to give FAU a 46-45 lead with 7:52 to play. Again, the Owls went cold from the field, missing their next six shots and committing three turnovers over the next five minutes, allowing Marshall to build up a 59-49 lead with 2:36 on the clock.

A layup by Gorrell would make it a six-point game with 35 seconds to play, but the Owls could get no closer.

FAU returns home to host FIU on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 5 p.m. at FAU Arena.

A strong defensive effort led the Owls past rival FIU 77-63 on Saturday afternoon in Boca Raton, marking the first time since 2011-12 that FAU has swept a season series.

FAU notched 19 points off of Panther miscues, while registering seven steals and three blocks for the contest. The steals effort was 4.6 above their average on the year.

Never trailing, Florida Atlantic (9-8, 3-3) led by as many as 21 points before an eventual 45-31 advantage at intermission. The Panthers would get no closer than 12 points during the second half.

Ali Gorrell notched a double-double, hauling in a career best 12 rebounds as an Owl to go with 11 points.

Shaneese Bailey posted her 6th 20+ point outing of the season with a game best 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the floor.

With the loss, Florida International (3-14, 0-6) remains winless both on the road and in league play for 2014-15.

The Owls will next host Charlotte in the second of a three game home stint on Thursday at 7:00 PM in The Burrow.

FAU suffered a lopsided setback to Old Dominion on Saturday in The Burrow…game release via SID Brandon Goodwin:

An early 20-4 run by Old Dominion proved to be the downfall of the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team as the Owls lost 72-44 in the Conference USA matchup on Saturday.

The Monarchs (13-7, 6-3 C-USA) held FAU to just six points over the first 11 minutes of the game to lead 24-6 before extending the advantage to 31-10 eight minutes later. FAU junior Ali Gorrell scored the team’s first six points for the Owls (10-9, 4-4 C-USA), but her teammates couldn’t find the bottom of the basket until the nine minute mark of the first half.

Gorrell had eight of FAU’s 19 first-half points, the second-lowest first-half outing for the Owls this season (17 points at Marshall, Jan. 17.). Freshman Sasha Cedeno hit a three-pointer in the final minute of the half to cut the ODU lead to 38-19 at the break.

Bailey scored 13 of her team-high 15 points in the second half and guided the Owls to pull within 19 at the 10:30 mark, but FAU could get no closer. Bailey scored nine straight points for FAU before going to the bench for the final 5:30.

The Monarchs went on an 8-2 run in that span to extend the lead to a game-high 28 points for the final score of 72-44.

ODU’s Jennie Simms followed up her 45-point outing at FIU on Thursday with 19 points and ten rebounds against the Owls. Destinee Young also recorded a double-double with 13 points and ten boards. ODU’s 55 rebounds is the most allowed by FAU this season.

Bailey ended the game with 15 points and seven rebounds while Gorrell ended the night with ten points. Freshman Melinda Myers contributed six rebounds and four second-half points.

The Owls go on the road next week to face UTEP at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday, Feb. 5 and UTSA on Sunday, Feb. 8 at noon ET. The UTSA matchup will be televised on Fox Sports.
