FINAL:  FAU 63  FIU 52

FAU women's basketball won their second straight game and concluded a regular season sweep against FIU on Saturday with a 63-52 road victory against the Panthers (4-23, 2-14) in Miami.

It was the first win in the last eight tries away from Boca Raton, following a 62-55 defeat of Florida Gulf Coast back on November 17th, 2015 in Fort Meyers.

“We’ve been close, so it’s nice to come in here and get a win", said Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay. "We knew they were going to play hard on their senior day.”

Kat Wright had 15 points and a career best 10 rebounds for the Owls (13-14, 5-11), and Ali Gorrell added 16 points and four rebounds.

Florida Atlantic held FIU to just 1-of-13 three point shooting, and out rebounded the Panthers 46-37 for the contest.

The Owls never trailed beyond the 4:38 mark of the first quarter.

Two regular season match ups against Middle Tennessee and UAB before remain for FAU before the start of the Conference USA Tournament.

FINAL:

FAU 52  UAB 51

Two missed free throws with 1.6 seconds on the clock allowed the Florida Atlantic University women’s basketball team to win their final regular-season game 52-51 at UAB on Saturday.

“I’ll escape any day with a win,” FAU Head Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay said. “I thought we fought back. Our focus wasn’t there at the start, but we came out in the second half as a focused group.”

The Owls (14-15, 6-12 C-USA) guaranteed themselves at least a No. 12 seed in the Conference USA Tournament after recording their 15th game with at least ten three-pointers, led by Kat Wright’s four for 14 points and nine rebounds. Morgan Robinson posted 11 points while Raven Doyle scored six. The Owls could move into the No. 11 spot if North Texas falls at Charlotte later Saturday night.

The first quarter featured five lead changes and two ties before a layup with 24 seconds on the clock gave the Blazers (14-15, 7-11 C-USA) a 19-17 lead at the end of the period.

UAB went up by as many as six in the second quarter before Robinson buried a three and Wright hit a jumper to slice the lead to one. Again, UAB made a layup in the closing seconds to bump the lead to 34-31 going to intermission.

The Blazers held FAU to just one basket over the first 6:51 of the third quarter, but the defense held strong allowing the Owls to take a 41-40 lead on two Doyle free throws at the end of the quarter.

Sophomore Nika Zyryanova went on a personal 5-0 run early in the fourth to give FAU its largest lead at 49-45. UAB responded with a 6-0 run to go up by two before Malia Kency made FAU’s 10th three-pointer with 1:38 on the clock. The Owls coaxed three missed field goals before fouling with 1.6 seconds to play, where UAB missed two free throws to end the contest. The Blazers went 2-of-8 from the free throw line in the game.

FAU opens the C-USA Tournament on Tuesday, March 8th at 12:00 PM as the #12 seed against #13 North Texas.

C-USA Tournament FINAL:

UNT 79  FAU 74

Ali Gorrell scored 30 second half points, but it wasn't enough as the #13 Mean Green end FAU's 2015-16 campaign with a 79-74 loss in the Conference USA Tournament. North Texas' win avenges the #12 Owls' 71-61 victory in the regular season meeting in Boca Raton.

"You have to give a lot of credit to North Texas. Every time we came back, they answered back and finished when they need to", said FAU Head Coach Kellie Lewis-Jay. "Ali is our heart and sole. This is one of the hardest press conferences. It's going to be tough for a while but she is tough."

With rebounds and turnovers being relatively even, UNT found the most significant advantage in out-shooting Florida Atlantic 48% to 39% from the floor overall, and 47% to 35% from long range.

"They made big shots when it mattered.", Gorrell said.
