2017-2018 FAU Women's Basketball Schedule

The FAU women topped Delaware State on Friday afternoon, 90-67, to advance to the championship game of the FAU Holiday Classic

After the Hornets (1-11) scored the first points of game on a three in the opening minute, the Owls responded quickly with an 11-0 run to permanently take the lead.

Their largest lead came at the 5:10 mark of the fourth quarter when they took a 27-point lead on a pair of free throws from Danneal Ford.

FAU was aggressive on defense, registering a season-high 12 steals in the game. The Owls also had a season-low eight turnovers in the game while forcing Delaware State into 25 miscues. FAU capitalized with 28 points on turnovers.

Tyana Robinson and Malia Kency each had 13 points in the game. Kency was a scorching 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Ra’Kyra Gabriel added 12 points and was one rebound short from a double-double.

The Owls (5-5) will face the winner of Stetson vs. UMKC Saturday at 2:30 PM.

The Owls claimed the FAU Holiday Classic title with a 65-55 win against UMKC on Saturday afternoon, moving to .500 for the first time this season.

Florida Atlantic (6-5) took an early lead against the Kangaroos, but the first period was back-and-forth before Owls ended on a 5-0 run to take a 19-14 lead.

FAU had its best second quarter shooting percentage this season after hitting 7-of-12 (58.3%) from the field and enjoyed a 34-21 lead.

Conversely, the Owls had their lowest shooting percentage at just 15.4 percent in the third quarter, as the Kangaroos doubled their score by scoring 21 points in the period.

With 5:56 left in the game, UMKC (3-11) hit a pair of free throws to go ahead by one, but it would be their last of the game.

Danneal Ford (11 pts) came out of the media timeout and drained a three to put the Owls ahead for good. The Owls would on to outscore the Kangaroos 17-6 from that point on.

Sasha Cedeño led the Owls in scoring for the eighth time this season. She finished with 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists and a block. The block ties her for eighth all-time in career blocks with 57.

Cedeño was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament as well as being named to the all-tournament team.

The Owls open Conference USA play on January 5 when they host Marshall for the first of a three game home stand at 7:00 PM.

FAU women's basketball earned their first league victory since March 5, 2016 in an impressive 79-59 comeback effort against Marshall (6-8, 0-1 C-USA) on Friday night at FAU Arena.

The win marks the first for Jim Jabir in Conference USA as well.

After giving up a 14-0 deficit to begin the contest, the Owls used an 18-0 run to not only retake the lead, but to put themselves ahead by 16 at halftime - marking a 30 point turnaround.

Malia Kency (4-of-7 3PT) had a season-high 20 points in the game, which was just one point shy of her career best, and Danneal Ford finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Florida Atlantic had their best shooting night of the season, finishing at 43.8% from the floor overall, and saw the bench outscore the Herd 40-0.

The Owls  (7-5, 1-0 C-USA) will next host UTEP on Sunday at 2:00 PM.

The Owls improved to 2-0 in Conference USA play and stretched their winning streak to four games with a 72-66 victory against UTEP (10-5, 1-1) at FAU Arena on Sunday.

FAU narrowly missed having four players in double-digit scoring while outscoring the Miners in points off of turnovers, 24-10, and second chance points, 21-6.

Tyana Robinson led all scorers with 19 points in the contest with five three pointers.

Florida Atlantic (8-5, 2-0) used the first quarter to build a lead against UTEP that they would not relinquish for the entire game. The Owls had a 21-10 advantage after the first period.

The team will conclude a five game home stand against Rice on Thursday at 7:00 PM.

FAU women’s basketball team suffered its first loss in five games on Thursday night in a 67-53 setback to Rice.

The Owls (8-6, 2-1) started the game with a 5-0 run but Rice matched them to tie the game. From there, the two teams traded baskets for most of the rest of the period and Rice took a six-point lead into the second.

In the second period, FAU stayed with Rice and even retook the lead at the 8:06 mark. At halftime, Rice led 28-25.

Rice (13-2, 3-0) had a 7-0 run midway through the third period to extend their lead to double digits, but the Owls continued to fight back. However, Rice ended the quarter on a 13-0 run to take a 21-point lead into the final period.

FAU fought back and outscored Rice, 17-10, in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough.

Danneal Ford and Sasha Cedeño each had 12 points in the game. Ford has scored double digits in four straight games. For also had three rebounds and three assists. Cedeño led all FAU rebounders with eight in the game.

Florida Atlantic will have the weekend off and will next be back in action on January 18 at UTEP.

UTEP rallied from 15 down to knock off Florida Atlantic, 75-70, at the Don Haskins Center Thursday evening.

This year's Miners (12-6, 3-2) become the first team in program history to have multiple 15+ point comebacks.

But the Owls (8-7, 2-2 C-USA) made them work for it by nailing 10 triples, including eight in the first half, to lead, 45-30, late in the first half.

The deficit was 11 midway through the third quarter before the Miners wrapped a 15-0 run around the quarter break to secure their first lead since the opening minutes of action.

It was back-and-forth down the stretch with four lead changes in the final five minutes, including UTEP scoring the final six points of the contest after FAU led 70-69 with 56 seconds left.

FAU (8-6, 2-2) had a season-high 10 three-pointers in the game coming from five different players. Malia Kency tallied 21 points to lead a quartet of Owls in double figures.

The Owls will next look to snap a two game slide on Saturday at 7:00 PM when they return home to take on Louisiana Tech.

FAU women’s basketball topped Louisiana Tech 86-72 on Saturday night behind 30 points from Sasha Cedeño and 21 points from Danneal Ford.

The Owls (9-7, 3-2) jumped out to an early lead against the Bulldogs and were able to stay ahead the entire game.

Louisiana Tech pounced on Florida Atlantic to start the second half, outscoring them 17-4 through the first six minutes of the third quarter, however the Owls responded by going on a 7-2 run to end the frame.

FAU ended the game by outscoring the Lady Techsters 25-21 in the final quarter, which was fueled by 14 points from Danneal Ford.(12-7, 3-3)

Cedeño's 30 points was a career high and she also pulled down 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. She is now 25 points shy of breaking into the top 10 in career scoring in the FAU record book.

FAU’s 50 first half points were the most for the Owls this season, and they outrebounded LA Tech, 50-35.

Florida Atlantic will hit the road for the next three games, which begins with a visit to UTSA on Thursday.

Tipoff is set for 8:00 PM.

Behind three 20-point scorers, Florida Atlantic women’s basketball earned an impressive 99-65 win at UTSA on Thursday night.

Sasha Cedeño opened the game with a three on FAU’s first possession of the game, but UTSA quickly followed with a 7-0 run to take a 7-3 lead.

The Owls (10-7, 4-2) didn’t back down and went on an 8-0 run of their own. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the period and were tied up when Malia Kency hit a go-ahead layup with to take a two-point lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter started out back-and-forth but FAU ended the period outscoring the Roadrunners, 10-6, and took a 43-36 lead into halftime.

The Owls had a hot start to the second half, hitting five of their first six shots from the field and starting the period on a 9-0 run.

FAU outscored UTSA (3-16, 1-6) 28-13 in the third period behind a scorching 69.2 shooting percent from the field.

Florida Atlantic ended on a high note, scoring 28 points in the fourth quarter.

Ra’Kyra Gabriel celebrated her birthday by leading all scorers with a career-high 27 points, Danneal Ford tied her career high with 25 points, and Sasha Cedeño maintained her season average with 22 points in the game and eight rebounds.

FAU will travel to UAB on Saturday.

UAB women's basketball outscored visiting FAU 19-7 in the first quarter and never looked back in route to a 90-57 win on Saturday night.

The Owls (10-8, 4-3) struggled offensively, only shooting 11% from the field compared to the Blazer's 62% percent.

Florida Atlantic was able to get more going in the second period but were unable to hold UAB, who grew their lead to enjoy a 46-26 halftime lead.

Ra’Kyra Gabriel and Danneal Ford powered the FAU offense in the third quarter, combining for 14 points, however UAB used a 10-0 run midway through the period to keep the Owls at bay.

FAU had another scoring drought in the fourth quarter when the Blazers (17-3, 6-1) had a 9-0 run that spanned nearly four minutes.

Gabriel led the Owls with 24 points and seven rebounds in what was the worst loss of the season for Florida Atlantic, who saw leading scorer Sasha Cedeño held scoreless (0-9).

FAU will have a full week off before facing WKU in Bowling Green next Saturday at 3:00 PM.
