2013 FAU Football Preseason Camp

Some Day Three notables via FAU…

The Owls worked through unit drills, 7-on-7 and team at the high pace that the coaching staff has been emphasizing. Defensive Coordinator Pete Rekstis noted the improved fitness of the team while pointing out the team still has progress to make in that area.

“Our guys are finding out that the work they put in the summer is paying off, but they have to get themselves in football shape…they have responded pretty well.”

In the first full squad session, the defense made several big plays in the passing game, including an interception and several pass breakups. That carried over to the second 11-on-11 period, where the defense produced more turnovers as coaches on both sides of the ball encouraged their players to maintain an up-tempo pace.

Some Day Two notables via FAU…

Florida Atlantic University's football team took to the field on Sunday morning to the realization that yesterday's cloud cover was an anomaly and that day two of preseason camp would be a humid one.

The Owls worked through unit drills, 7-on-7 and team at a pace much like the first day. The running backs worked on footwork and ball security unveiling ball covers that are slick forcing the backs to secure the ball while coaches attempted to bat away.

When asked about the improvements of running back Martese Jackson, offensive coordinator Brian Wright gave high praises.

"Martese is working on his consistency," said Wright. "He is fast and could be a great weapon for us."

7-on-7 began with a bang as Stephen Curtis hit senior receiver Daniel McKinney. Melvin German followed with back-to-back big plays, first hitting William Dukes with a long pass and a score followed by an outlet pass to Tony Moore who used his legs to find the end zone. Not to be out done, newcomer Jaquez Johnson opened his opportunity with a 20 yard pass to senior wide receiver DeAndre Richardson. As they moved into full team, German connected with senior tight end Nexon Dorvilus for the period's big play.

The next to last period focused on special teams which gave Head Coach Carl Pelini time to work with the defensive lineman who appear to be much deeper and much stronger. To close out the day McKinney had another big catch and run.

The Owls will be off tomorrow for film observation.

FAU release notables from the Owls' first Two-A-Day:

Florida Atlantic University’s football team completed its first 2013 two-a-day, Friday.

The day began with breakfast at 7 a.m. before the team hit the field at 8:45 a.m. After two hours of on-the field work, the day was just beginning for a team that is preparing to make waves in Conference USA.

The morning session was highlighted by two things. The first was a visit from the Delray Beach Boys & Girls Club. The second was a 40+ yard pass from incoming freshman DJ Juste to classmate Kalib Woods for a score. While the race to the top of the depth chart is well underway the underclassmen are pushing hard for a spots as well.

The Owls used some of the time between practices to move from preseason housing to their fall dorm rooms and then returned to the practice fields for a 6:30 p.m. workout.

The evening practice saw Martese Jackson prove his merit with catches out of the backfield and long runs.

When you hear CP talk about the practices and how the players are developing, hard to not to get excited about the upcoming season.

Release notes for Saturday…

Florida Atlantic University’s football team returned to the practice field Saturday morning, in full pads for the second day, and was permitted  full contact for the first time in 2013.

Special teams were first on the schedule and were more a part of the practice schedule than in recent days. Every unit continued to work on ball security.

During 7-on-7 it was Christian Milstead who gained praise for breaking up a 60-yard pass that would have been a score.

The next team session saw a tightly cover DeAndre Richardson haul in a red zone pass for a score. The Owls defense also recorded multiple stops, during the red zone session, forcing field goals. Hakeeme Ishmar beat his man for a red zone score and quarterback Jaquez Johnson connected with Marcus Cunningham in the back of the end zone.

FAU will use Sunday for corrections and meetings and will return to the practice field Monday morning.
