1961 Obelisk

So apparently they're going to be adding a "1961 Obelisk" in front of the SO building "as a focal point of the free speech forum." It will be funded by the Office of Annual Giving in cooperation with the Architect's Office.

I assume it's just an obelisk with "1961" inscribed on it since that's when FAU was first founded. What's an obelisk? Yeah, I had to look it up too… because I thought it was a giant snake (that's a Basilisk… close)

This is an obelisk

but I imagine ours will probably be about 6 feet tall.

Re: 1961 Obelisk

They've updated the 1961 Obelisk site with various site proposals.

Proposal 1

What's great about the long fountain is that we can have events where students go in the water… a number of universitities do things like that (Stanford comes to mind). Plus, the long fountain complements the Washington Monument very well. The old-fashioned streetlights are very cool as well. The more I look at this one, the more I like it.

Proposal 2

Outside of the long fountain, I really like the – what is the term for it? – these southern-style wood coverings for the benches. I've seen them partially covered in pink and white flowers because you can grow vines on them. That would add to the plaza but you have the potential of wasp/bee nests in there.

Proposal 3

I think this one has a number of issues, like the fountain is too short and benches are right on the main walking paths. It's just kinda boring.

So what do you guys think?

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. But they'll scale it to whatever the actual area is.

I like proposal 1 & 2 in that order,  the only thing I didn't like in proposal #2 are the post lights that are closest to the fountain - they should limit them to a row down the middle or use some type of pathway lighting instead.

Yeah, I agree. The obelisk will already have its own lighting so there really is no need for that additional light.
