Brogan threatens to disband student government

I'm with IllinoisOwl. This little – actually, big, when you consider the dollars involved – fiefdom must be held to account. If something is wrong, we must remember that individuals, not the institution itself, are responsible.

If any reasonable evidence exists of illegal activity, appropriate outside authorities must – must – be involved. If charges are filed, or indictments handed down, those named should be ousted pending resolution of such. As I understand things, money handled by Student Government is, in effect, state money. Anyone – anyone – who doesn't report illegal acts, or who stands in the way of an investigation by appropriate outside authorities, is equally guilty.

If impropriety short of illegal activity but still in violation of university policies and procedures, has taken place, a prompt, thorough and open-to-the-public investigation must – must – be conducted. Public trust is at stake. Is there an Honor Code at the university these days?

The trick, of course, is to act promptly, decisively and effectively while still protecting rights of the accused pending confession, conviction, etc.

The university must make it utterly clear to all that impropriety will not be tolerated. If impropriety has occurred, the university also would be most wise to follow the chain and determine who, no matter how high, was supposed to be minding the store. It could be that more than students should be held accountable.

And, I guess, it could be that no infractions have taken place. But since the questions are in the public domain, the answers better be, also. And soon.

I don't know if goes back to Cantese or what. Maybe he tolerated it. He is quoted that the Corevette deal was appropriate even though they had to sneak the money from the foundation with a bogus remodeling invoice. This may be something left over from him. If he felt there was nothing wrong with the way the car was obtained then it wouldn't suprise me if that culture flowed into other areas of the university.

Times have changed, alas. I had a great boss (the late Jack Kent Cooke) who once dispatched his No. 1 financial guy to New Mexico to personally fire a guy who had been stealing from the company, then summon the sheriff and insist charges be filed. This tends to discourage others who might be contemplating embezzlement. I do not recall ever hearing of even one subsequent case.
