Excellent article on the costs of Bowl Games

Looks like we're in for a world of financial hurt if we continue to climb the ladder too quickly:

SPECIAL REPORT: Price of success | bowl, schools, last - Sports - The Orange County Register

Thoughts?

It's a problem, but it's a problem I'd love to have.  Yes, most Bowls are money-losers, but what would it have cost FAU for the amount of publicity they received before, during, and after the bowl game?  The game itself was a 3 hour commercial for the team and school.  How many more people now know that FAU exists than before last Friday?  Also, if you watch any College Football show on ESPN, they show the highlights over again and often say something nice about Schnelly and the program.  Not to mention the school being mentioned in every newspaper in the country, stories written about the team in papers like the NY Post.  You can't buy that kind of attention.  So yes, it does get more expensive as you climb the ladder, but with that success comes more fan support and more donors to offset that cost.

FAU has been stringent before so I imagine they could be with Bowl games too if they thought it was a legitimate problem. For instance, can't afford babysitters or rooms for the wives? I can see FAU saying they have to pay their own way if they want to go.

Hotel costs are another issue. It sounds like it's a profit plan worked out between the bowl officials and the hotels. The hotels can pretty much charge whatever they want and the teams have to pay. That's something that could really only be fixed by all the colleges banding together and saying, "Look, we're not paying that."
