That thundercats clip was classic.
If they do change to that logo, yes they need to play that, or the band could learn it.

Which begs the question, what would we rename FAU (if we had to)
Boca State University
Florida Atlantic State University
Atlantic State University
State University of Florida at Boca Raton
The University of Florida Atlantic
The trend is AWAY from directional (see ULL, ULM) and "state" (see Troy and what MTSU wants to do). Both USF and UCF insist on being called by their acronym and NEVER "South Florida" or "Central Florida" - nobody wants to be known as a directional school. Instead, they want to create a brand like USC (the one in California).
During the rebranding effort I suggested that we drop Florida from our name altogether and simply go by "Atlantic University". I still think it's a much better name. There is a very small school by that name with programs in "dream interpretation" and "alternative healing" - I don't think it would be an issue.
The bottom line is that you don't want a direction in your name and you don't want "state" in your name. These make you seem like (at the most) a #2 university. Today, everyone wants to appear to be the flagship (even if it's not realistic). One reason FAU and FIU are grouped together so often (e.g. ESPN's F_U) is because the names are so similar and somewhat arbitrary (they don't have a hundred years of history… we could have just as easily been known as something ridiculous such as A-OK U or Sunshine U).

… although I do like their logo.
Re: FIU has a new logo....THUNDERCATS!
Atlantic University (I agree with LM77)
remember there is a Pacific University in California
as for the whole "directional" school, "state" school" and "hyphenated" school talk.. college athletics is changing way too rapidly to worry about that, anymore, IMO
North Carolina Tarheels OFFICIAL name? University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
Ohio State is 100000 times the school Ohio will EVER be
i know some schools DO try to brand themselves as the acronym, but USC has called itself USC for DECADES before that was ever an issue…
UCF, Central Florida, Mickey Mouse University, Community College of Central Florida, Orlando's Playground University - doesn't matter what you name them… their fans are pathetic no matter what

Troy, around 10 years ago, considered a name change, with possibilities like Alabama International (ugh), Alabama Southern and even the University of Alabama at Troy. Thank God that last one didn't fly.
I like "Atlantic University".

Ha I also just read something about how they (the athletic department mostly) had wanted to rebrand the WHOLE university to set themselves apart from the 3 letter schools. FAU, USF, UCF, FSU..
A couple of the suggestions:
Miami State University (Not that bad..except for the other two Miami schools)
State University of Florida at Miami (SUFM?, SUF@M?)
On the other hand, I do think "Miami State" is a better name than "Florida International." I wonder if FIU ever considered embracing it's Latino students and surroundings and try to become the top university for Spanish-speaking students in America. It would be a nice niche for them.SeminOWL2006 said

Wow, those are all really, really bad. I know when they first founded the school, names they had considered where Boca University (which isn't necessarily bad), Sunshine State University (omg, so bad, but not as bad as…) and A-OK University (sooo glad that got shot down).
Also, you may know that at various points in the history of Florida, universities came into financial troubles and it was suggested that they become branch campuses of the University of Florida. At one point, FAU was about to become the University of Florida at Boca Raton.
I think two other schools were in a similar circumstance but obviously had fended off the change.
I think embracing the Latino population is the very reason they went for the International in Florida International in the first place. If you ever fly to South America the in-flight magazine for American Airlines always has adds for FIU claiming that they are the number one university in the U.S. in terms of MBAs granted to international students of Latino heritage. I don't see them changing their name anytime soon.
GO OWLS!!!
Re: FIU has a new logo....THUNDERCATS!
I don't see why FIU is making such a push to change. I think the international makes sense for them. It isn't directional and it speaks to a broader audience.
GO OWLS!!!
